The Brietling thread is really interesting, and has raised some good points (all valid IMO). So, why do you chose a particular watch (perhaps your main, or favourite watch if you own a few)? No wrong answers!

1. Just liked it in the shop and didn't give it much though, I just buy a design/brand/colour I like.

2. A watch is like man-jewellery so I bought for the precious metal/stone content.

3. A watch is a perfect little machine. Hundreds of moving parts all working together so I buy a watch with a movement I like/respect (although the watch obviously needs to look nice as well).

4. History. I bought because of a certain historical link - maybe Jacques Costeau divers watches, Speedmaster professionals or Michael Schumacher watches.

5. I buy because my Dad/Grandad had the same type of watch - its a family tradition.

6. The watch is aimed at me - I bought a Breitling because I am a pilot or a Milgauss because I am a scientist etc

I can't think of many other reasons - but would be interested to hear of any! Like I said - no wrong answers, no snobbery - just interested why people pick what they pick.

Multiple answers ok - but assume they all look aesthetically ok as not many of us would wear a turd on string because it had a Patek annual calander insidewink

I would of added 'Status symbol' to get a more accurate picture of why some were purchased.

Certainly true for me - not sure whether others would be prepared to admit it though!

Omega Seamaster - Treat to myself after spending 4 months in the Gulf over Christmas and New Year 1999 into 2000.

Oceanus OCX-600 - Spotted on vacation in Canada last year - tons of features, solid Titanium case and bracelet for not a lot of money

Tag Carrera Automatic - Just like the look. Period

Seiko 5 Divers - Had an orange face and funky hands (every watch fan should have some orange in their collection at one point)

Coming soon - Seiko 5 Dress watch, silver face and silver hands - for wearing out with a suit.

Sinn U2 - as above, submarine steel, GMT function and tough as nails

Casio G Shock in White - Looks. Love it in white

Hamilton Jazzmaster - liked the look and the clear back.

Carl F Bucherer - Its what happens when you got cash in your pocket! I went to get a Tag but I wanted something more special. I had an open mind at the time. This was double the price of the Tag but I loved the look and I have yet to see someone else wearing one let alone a place that is selling them. So looks and how little are made really. Love wearing it and will never sell it.

Seikos - Liked the looks, cheap and don't mind getting it bashed, same with my citizens.

So all in all looks really. If I like it and can afford it at the time then I will get it. Movement or name brand is not something that bothers me.

Just liked it.

Bought a TAG Carrera GMT after i passed my apprenticeship. My father did the same thing when he passed his apprenticeship. So i guess it was kind of tradition but i chose the TAG because i liked it.

Tag Carrera Classic Chrono - Same as everyone I guess - love the look, very classic and there is still a tenuous motorsport link. First mechanical watch. Hardly wear it now as it's not in the same class to wear (feel & quality) as the next two - shame really.

Rolex Sea Dweller - Technically a gift (an engagement present from the missus) but I chose it. Wanted a solid, tough dive/sports watch - against the competition it won out on pretty much all counts - never dreamt of having a Rolex but ignore that fact (as I couldn't give a stuff what someone else thinks) and it is a bloody good watch - bulletproof.

Glashütte Orginal, PanoMaticLunar in Stainless Steel with black strap - just fell in love with it. Stunning movement, very understated and classy (if I say so myself). My first Manufacture watch - not the last.

None of the above. Ageing eyesight meant a change from the Navitimer to something more visible without reading glasses, hence I bought an IWC Spitfire chrono at 42mm. So the reason is:-

PRACTICALITY!

Wouldn't practicality dictate you got a backlit quartz watch though? You must have picked IWC over the other readable watches (I know what you mean about the Navitimer and I'm only 31wink )?

Perhaps I made a mess of the poll by allowing multiple votes, as lots of people have put 'just like it' and also another, more reasoned choice. For 'just like it' I meant more like my Mrs who sees something and couldnt give a stuff if it is gold/steel/quartz/mechanical/historical or made by a new company but if she likes it, she likes it - purely aesthetics (I guess). Obviously nobody here would buy a watch they didnt like because of one of the other options.

I am genuinely surprised that nobody has chosen the 'linked to my job option' - thats a lot of marketing money going down the toilet as I know we have some pilots/scientists/divers herewink

Ok, so my choices...

Speedmasters - historical link, definitely. I'm a keep Apollo 'fan' and think there is nothing better than wearing the watch the astronauts wore on the missions as an everyday reminder of one of my hobbies (kind of like wearing a transformers watch when I was 8wink ). Originally I bought a vintage speedmaster, but have added to this with modern versions and limited editions. I bought my Gemini 4 watch after meeting the surviving astronaut one day - so a definite historical link for me.

Rolex - Dad gave me his Oysterdate for my 21st so a bit of tradition I guess, but whatever you say they do shout quality (maybe a little too loudly sometimeswink ). My SD was bought as a present to myself for landing a new job at a better company in a higher position - I guess I bought it partly because it seemed bulletproof and partly as an upgrade for the Oysterdate, so maybe tradition creeping in.

Seikos - cheap as you like. I can get an itch and within a few days have a new watch delivered which doesnt need explaining away or endlessly justifying. I buy them over other cheap watches as the use of their own movements sets seiko apart from other manufacturers (at many price points above), so its movement for me with the seikos.

I bought a Planet Ocean because it was cheap and sold it within 6 months as it didnt mean anything to me.
