What would you suggest?
Discussion
I have been saving for a while now and have managed to get 5k together and wondering whether i would be better getting one 4-5k watch or possibly 2or3 1-2k watches. I was thinking maybe a Breitling Bentley GT for 4k? or a tag monaco £2k and a IWC portofino/mont blanc timewalker depending on which one i prefer for around 2k? Any advice would be apprieciated
IMHO would get two or three watches. Would definatley go for an IWC - perhaps this one for £3200 -
And, I have been told on good authority that every man should have an Omega Speedmaster in their collection -
Although, I have found out that this is going to a limited edition 40th anniversary edition of Apollo 11's landing coming out next year.
Would also consider some of the more less known makes like Fortis, Glycine, Sinn and Anonimo amogst others. I am sure you are going to be taking your time choosing and hope this has given you some idea on how to go forward.

cheers for the advice, i will definatley have a look your suggestions. Im looking to get my watch for around August because thats when my birthday is so trying as many watches as i can in that time. Iv given up on the Breitling looks far to large when on so definatley wanting to starting a collection with a few good watches
If you are in London before your birthday, go and have a look at Burlington Arcade just off Bond St. - Watches of Switzerland, Omega, Rolex are all down there. Also, been told that the 3rd floor (I think) of Selfridges is packed with watches (will be going there myself in August) and lastly, check out www.jurawatches.co.uk and have a look. Almost forgot, also speak to Dominic H on here and see what stock he has got or can lay his hands on.
Let us know what you get and how you are getting on with it.

If you are ok with secondhand then your 5k will buy you a lot - you could get...
Rolex Sea Dweller - (I paid £1,900, although no papers)
Omega Speedmaster Pro (I paid £1,100 for a 1974 in excellent condition)
Sinn (say £600) for smarter occasions
Then maybe a £1,400 Breitling Navitimer (I'd try and get a vintage one personally)
Happy hunting - what a great day out you'll have!!!

Sorry for the hijack - but where did you hear this? The Omega shop said they didnt know a couple of weeks ago...http://tz-uk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=460...
I'd second CmdrBond's suggestions. With a £5K budget you could put together a very tidy little collection. I certainly wouldn't put all your eggs in one basket unless you are certain you only want a single watch forever. My collection is:-
Omega Speedmaster Auto
Omega Speedmaster Pro X-33
Girard-Perregaux Traveller II
Glycine Airman 18
Poljot 3133 Sturmanskie
Adds up to about £5-6K in total. It's nice to have different watches to wear and they're all suited to different uses eg. G-P for special occasions, Glycine for outdoor sports, Speedmasters for just about anything!

Lots of good suggestions here.
Unless you really want a single 5k watch I would certianly go with the several very nice watches suggestion.
If I were you I'd put together a short list of candidates and then take your time looking on the second hand market. This way you don't just go out and buy a collection in one go, rather you will build it up over time and it'll mean that much more to you. Also buying used will give vastly better value for money.
Obviously highly coloured by my own likes/dislikes but I'd be looking at possibles like:
JLC for dress/best
Omega SMP or a Zenith Class Sport for the chrono
Sinn or Damasko as a beater
Stowa MO because they are so lovely
And an Anonimo or IWC Aquatimer to fill the diver role.
A small but pefectly formed collection ... of course you might not get all those for 5k but by the time you've used up the 5k I'm sure you'll have managed to save a bit more ...

I'd certainly go with several nice pieces over one big one. The IWC mentioned earlier i can confirm is beautiful. I bought one near on two weeks ago and it's not been off my wrist yet!
Anonimo also mentioned, are nice and entry level Panerai are clear and simple, albeit requiring a large wrist.
Sinn, Stowa etc, all good, not forgetting Werners of course.
