While I'd love a A. Lange und Sohne, I think I'm going to save that itch for a while as right now I can't justify the dosh - well.... I can but the missus would kill me at this moment in time.

However, I'm very much drawn to the German watches (might explain why I drive a Porker) and have been looking at the GO Panomaticlunar in Stainless Steel.

Any views?

Fantastic watch and possibly next on my list. I am just trying to work out if I would be comfortable buying a 39mm watch, as I have got used to something a little larger.

I have a feeling I will end up owning one in the not too distant future.

If I can get a comparable deal then I'll have this baby within the week.

Problem is - there is a monopoly in Dubai and the prices are way to high - I'm in Bangkok next week and I'll see what price they can do or I'll wait until I'm in London in August.

Stunning watch

They do look really lovely watches though I must coonfess the styling doesn't really float my boat, I mean is the "moonphase" label really necessary ... ?

However, I'm a huge fan of German watches and have (amongst others) a Union Glashutte (the cheaper GO brand from before they switched to ETA movements for Union). A really super watch, I can only assume the GOs would be far nicer.

Have you looked at Dornbluth? I think money no object (and they aren't really extortionate either, considering pretty much the whole thing is handmade by one person) a 99.2 would be my next German watch.

The thing that I love about the dial is the simplicity - whether or not it should say 'moonphase' or 'panodate' for that matter is not something I've even thought about - I love the oversize date - something that I constantly refer to - and I think GO's solution is even more elegant than the mighty A. Lange & Sohne's as its on the same plane and not separated by the 'window frames'.

Only thing was I found it a bit light on the wrist but I guess that's to be expected as I had the Sea Dweller on at the time.

Well, what matters most is whether you like it. smile

I'm ashamed to say I'd never heard of Dornblueth until your post - nice story behind the watches, too. Thanks for broadening my horological horizons!

Looking at the 99.2, though, I'm slightly put off by the fact that part of some numerals have been 'excised' to make way for the two sub-dials. I know it's something you see on a lot of watches but it always makes me feel like the sub-dials were an after-thought, which is clearly not the case with the 99.2.

I attended the Hong Kong Art Fair earlier this month and Glashutte Original happened to have a display there, with one of their craftsmen hard at work, showing just how they are made.

Some of their watches really do look very nice and I may well consider one for my next purchase.

Got the missus on-board last night and said that I needed a smarter watch than the SD for business and more formal events and that I was going to treat it as a birthday pressie to my self (bday next week).

Excellent smile

Cheers mate

Sparky - I guess my grail watch is the Lange Dato. Saying that, I'd like to get it for a very special occasion, perhaps my 40th next year.

What I like about the GO watches is that they reflect the Glashutte design philosophy (modern wise, no doubt driven by Lange) but are still a bit more youthfull - more dynamic designs but with a definate regional identity. I find then very clean.

I also like the fact that its a bit of a sleeper.

These are really excellent watches and the styling is pretty unique so you want get mixed up with another watch brand. I have the none moonphase manual wind version, plus a union and a Dornblueth. The Dornblueth is a very special thing, made to order and when did you last have the chance to strike up a friendship with the guy who made your watch for you? That will happen with Dornblueth. The Glasshute is a "finer" movement, still not quite up there with Lange but a lot more accessable due to its price but oddly my Dornblueth is by far the most accurate mechanical watch that I own (I also have a few rolex's to compare) and that sort of makes it even more special. I did buy a Langer 1815 from the States a few years ago and sold it at a profit over here unworn, it was very nice but thats about it, not outstanding.

Agree with you completely Asterix. I've always loved the GO Panomatic range (esp. the tourbillon but that's too expensive) and I will almost certainly have one at some point.

Interestingly I thought that the Panomatics were big 42+ mm watches, which on my wrist is a no-no.... so if they're actually 39mm then they'll fit perfectly, even more reason to save up for one!

In some respects I prefer the dial design of the Panomatics to Lange's offerings. Lange's movements are stunning but they are a LOT more expensive than GO.

Definitely on the list for a formal / non-sports watch, assuming I can't get an old Breguet for similar money...

GO do a Panomatic XL which does have a larger dial but the normal ones are a lovely size.

I'm off to Bangkok tonight so we'll soon see if I can get a better deal out there.

Excellent choice and IMHO one of the best models GO do thumbup

But don't think it will keep you from pining for a Lange wink Got myself a Langematik Anniversary (unused) for my 40th this year and love it to bits. Agree, Datograph is just fantastic. Have a look at the massive Platinum folding clasp it has. Truly a "superwatch" (as in "supercar")...
