Hi Guys,

The 1971 thread has got me thinking that Id love a vintage Rolex sports watch (70's).

Anybody know good places to look? I've checked Vintage Watch Company - seem pricey (but am I wrong here?)!

Thanks in advance.

A

Yep, I think they are hugely pricey....

Having said that, the Vintage Rolex Sports market is at an all time high and rising. I sold a 1971 Rolex Red Submariner-Date 1680/0 for a quite considerable sum last month, that would have been half the money 18 months ago.
As a guide, you want to be looking for a watch with a serial number between 321**** and 347****. You can also check the production as the year and 1/4 are marked on the inside of the caseback.

If I get anything suitable I'll drop you a line....

Dom.

Hi Dom,

Thank you for your kind advice and offer; please do get in touch if you get anything nice in.

Could I ask what the serial number significance is (date?)?

I think I'd be looking for a Sub / SD / Exp1

...to step in and answer on Dom's behalf - he was simply trying to advise what serial number range (for vintage Rolex sports models) will equate to 1971 production.

In my opinion, you can probably so as low as 3.0m serials. Rolex was always a bit inconsistent with its serial numbers issued in the 60's and 70's. smile

My advice for what it's worth...try sourcing from one of the auction houses: Bonhams/Sothebys. Check the item out well before the auction with their in-house watch specialist. Check price results from previous sales then compare them to high street offerings. Bag a bargain, that's where most of the dealer's stock comes from. Good luck!
