How do you determine how waterproof a watch is?

HI, I have a Seiko divers watch that says its watproof to 300m I have taken it to 50m with no problems. I have just brought a watch that is waterproof to 5ATM so 40m (1ATM = Atmosphere and 1 Atmosphere per 10 m of water). Does this mean that this watch can be taken to this depth without problem? Can anyone answer this?

My personal take on this is: "not as deep as it says" and if it isn't marked to at least 100m I won't swim in it.

If you really want waterproof you need an MTM Seal.
