Speedmaster 0000/1957 limited edition
Discussion
I need opinions URGENTLY !!!!!!!!
Omega are increasing their retail prices tomorrow across the board according to my local AD and I am so so sorely tempted with the special limited edition speedy (with the black enamel face) in their window.
Only interested in selling at RRP unfortunately (about 5 grand which is a lot for a steel speedy however special).
But….I would be really interested to know your views on this watch, for those who don’t know it seems to differ from the standard model in many ways:
(a) Enamel dial with old style applied omega logo, limited number on the dial itself.
(b) 3201 movement which is a manual co-axial escapement with column wheel for the chronograph with power reserve of 55 hours, chronometer certified. Sapphire caseback, decorated movement.
(c) Impressive looking massive Handmade wooden box with toolkit and loupe for changing the straps (metal and black ‘gator)
The reason why this appeals more than most is that it is a lot more of a special LE than average, rather than just a different dial with fancy caseback. Also my problem is if I got the Daytona I really want I couldn’t wear it to work because my boss would think I am paid too much! A speedy is well affordable by most and no-one will realise it was a lot more expensive than normal by a factor of 2.5 !
Is this always going to be a model I could if I wanted to trade in quite easily?

Mappin & Webb on Regents St were going to discount by 10% without any argument/attempt to get more! This was only last week.
I very nearly pulled the trigger on one of these - they are heavier than the 'normal' speedy and the bracelet is excellent. The box is something else completely - more akin to a watch 10x more expensive.
I didnt buy because I felt it was still overpriced and was a bit of a frankenstein-watch.
To me the 50th anniversay xxxx/1957 should be more akin to the original .321 caliber watches. The co-axial movement is unique to the watch but as I understand is really just a standard auto co-axial with the rotar chopped off (literally)!
The impression I got from reading posts online is that the watch is overpriced and aimed squarely at wealthy collectors, hence the very plush box being the main selling point.
I know 3 Jewellers now with them still in stock and think that they may have missjudged how many people would pay £5k for a Speedmaster - therefore I would imagine future trade in prices would be suprisingly low.
Personally I'd put 5k into a Gemini 4, Apollo 11 and Standard speedmaster!
As an aside, if you want something which is only noticed by those who 'know' then I believe IWC are doing a new Ceramic Spitfire Crono - £6k though.
ETA: the Omega shop on Bond St told me that a standard speedy will be coming out soon with a co-axial movement, so dont let that be the deciding factor.

Thanks Maxf. What you say makes a lot of sense. Frankly I am frustrated in my search for an original unmoslested minty 321 pre-moon. But this LE I could wear every day, but they might as well have kept the auto rotor rather than adapting it in a retrograde step, if you want it manual it's a 321 or 861.I very nearly pulled the trigger on one of these - they are heavier than the 'normal' speedy and the bracelet is excellent. It is an awful lot of dosh for a gimped up speedy. But that enamel dial is very nice indeed. I came very close today. But I'd rather do so with a big discount.
Or does anyone know if one of the 57 white gold examples are available anywhere? I found a dealer called Banks Lyon has the yellow and red gold versions but a white is more stealthy......only 57 of those.
A clear indication of the excessive price is the eaay availability as you say.
Sod the fancy box I want one with a pukka quality 321 movement....!!
If as you say the co-axial movement will be introduced later this year on standard speedys then there is less and less to differentiate except some clever marketing and the dial/box.
Oh well. Back to the drawing board. IWC suggestion noted but aside from the portugese chrono they are just not quite for me though great watches. I think stuff it, a strap version of the white gold daytona is going to be my aim now, but I have a dealer on the lookout for a good old 321 in any case for special occasions.

How much are you looking for? A few from Italy have not sold at just over £2k.Maxf said:

didnt know what would be a reasonable price for it?
Hi, I bought the xxxx/1957 Speedy and love it to bits. It may not be strictly 'true' to historical build but I don't care and haven't regretted getting it once! The box comes with additional Croc strap which is nice to use from time to time. From what I gather on other Watch forums, Omega make a loss on every one of these watches as the overall cost of design & build isn't covered by retail price. I almost bought the matching yellow gold in Glasgow a while back, but that would be too much. I'd really love the Rose Gold one though. There are 57 of each yellow, white and rose.
I bought my watch in Geneva for about 4.5k - ish, but had a LOT of freebies thrown in! That made it well worth it.

Hi Jshell. No of course it isn't strictly true to build etc but it is highly unusual. I really do like it but just want to find it at a reasonable cost (reckon should be able to get £1k off list as it is obvious they have had difficulty shifting them). I bought my watch in Geneva for about 4.5k - ish, but had a LOT of freebies thrown in! That made it well worth it.
The 57 of each gold examples are interesting but I can find the yellow and rose versions for sale but not the white gold.
Anyone have an idea where I can get the WHITE GOLD version?
One thing to note about the xxxx/1957 - it has 100m water resistance and the display back (normal speedys have on 50m water resistance so not that wearable for holidays/swimming etc). If I could get one for 4k I'd probably jump at it - but at 5.5k they are just too expensive for what they are.
