Ok, so Im going to buy a Sub fairly soon. I want black on black with the date. I know they have changed recently with the "ROLEXROLEXROLEXROLEX" round the face. but over the last 10 years what have been the changes, and is any model particularly desireable (in the approximate price range of a new one - c.£2,900) I have read briefly that some had plastic glass where others had crystal etc?

Thank you!

Not an expert, but I don't believe the Sub has changed much in the last 10 years.
All have white gold around the markers, SELs (solid end links), glass face - unlike earlier generations.
The later ones did away with the holes for the pins on the horns.
I believe the movement may have been changed a couple of years ago?

I still love them, despite the generally bad response on here (with some justification I might add).

Yeah, I really like them, and although some people think they are a bit flash, personally I disagree. Its not a flash watch at all (visually there is little polished metal, zero bling, and its chunky but nothing like Panerai - which I also love btw).

The only flash thing about it is its reputation, which could be likened to that of Porsche/BMW etc, because historically, along with Rolexes in general, they have been bought by the more slightly (not massively) more affluent person.

The reason this has caused a problem is three-fold.
Firstly there are those who cannot afford one but really want one, fuelling a demand for fakes.

Secondly there are those with jealousy issues that like to down-cry anything like this/nice cars/whatever, as "for wrs".

Finally there are inevitably "wrs" who DO wear them, and this can create justifiable ill feeling, although to brand a whole group of watch-wearers, due to the few smacks of the anti-porsche/bmw driver-ism that I mentioned previously.

Not saying people shouldnt "not like" them. Thats fine if its based on personal preference. If its based on the fact the "only tossers wear Rolexes", well thats just a bit primary school for me!

Personally, Im of the view that if someone wants to judge me based on what watch I choose, I suspect Im better off without them anyway.

Yes, I think the Anniversary one is great. I would like one, but think for me it would be as a stable-mate/super-sub to a black one, rather than my only one, if that makes sense.

For some reason I thought the Anniversary had a green face as well as bezel. Was this an option? I like that one with the black face better than the green-faced one (if a green-faced one exists and isn't a figment of my imagination...)

Never seen a green faced 50th.

Note the blobs on the hour markers are larger on the 50th ("Maxi dial.&quotwink

Mine's up for grabs for £2650 if you fancy it. One year old, still under warranty.

Thanks for the offer Vesuvius, and it is a very nice watch, but I think Im going to plump for a black one first off. You never know though, maybe an Anniversary will join it in the future!!

The bi-metal maybe a little more blingy, but I love the blue dial and blue face. Classic watch, instantly recognisable. Was tempted buy the 18K YG but that could be a bling too far! A keeper.

Yes sir, for the correct price.

Still on my wrist one day a week, and resting the other six!!

Ten months left on two year new watch warranty, and not a scratch on it!! Box, papers, seals and original purchase receipt included, of course.......

This one is up at SWC in Chiswick for £2995.

I am hankering after an IWC Portuguese, so I could be persuaded to part with it for something approaching £2700......

Does your watch have the same "no-pinholes" lugs, as the one in the photo does? I have a feeling all the Anniversary Subs had this, but just checking.
Could I email you about this?

I know the Sea Dweller is now a model in its own right - it was part of the Sub range to start with (I think).

I actually think the Sub and the SDare not bling as well - they're pretty understated and I got mine to be a nice but hard as nails every day wearer.

So far I have to say that I'm seriously impressed - accurate and it's already had some knocks and it feels like it's hewn from granite.

Bugger the Rolex is for tossers thing - as with everything - buy it for yourself and fk the rest.

i got the SD over the submariner as i wanted one with a date but not the magnifying bubble.

i've had it 9 yrs, wear it every day and it still looks brand new. i do still smile a little whenever i check the time smile

Agreed - exactly my reasons - plus I love the ridiculous overengineering for my use.

Yeah, that gas discharge valve is vital in the bath

you joke, but it's come in handy many times - if i jump out of the bath after soaking (at great depth) for a while, i know there won't be a problem when decompression occurs.

hehe

SpydieNut, you're being a bit overcautious worrying about the bends in the bath...

hehe

I believe 2000 MY Subs have the solid end links and the revised diver's extension mechanism, so anything from a P serial onwards would get you the most up to date design as I don't believe the jumbo markers from the LV were carried over to the regular model.
