Recently saw a new Rotary skeleton watch in a window complete with winder box for £495 and it got me thinking why do other named watches cost considerably more? I waste money on nice watches but do they cost any more to produce?

Its the quality of the movement the case materials glass/crystal) high grade stainless etc, the engineering tolerances and a hoooge uplift for the brand name.

At the prices they are charging I very much doubt they are swiss movements and also doubt they are Jap ones - so they are probably Chinese. Still 2 year warranty is good and they look quite nice if you like that sort of thing.

But some winder boxes cost a lot of money.... Personally I'd think I'd get it just for that. How sad am I?

if you make anything in volume you gain economy of scale so the quality argument goes out of the window (unless your a watch salesman) and funnilly enough the least accurate watch i own is a Daytona and i only have mechanical watches.

It has to be asked precious metals aside, are the high prices because we are mug enough to pay them.

yep in the same way people are mug enough to buy a BMW 3 series when a Ford Mondeo is better looking, better made cheaper and drives just as good, or the Skoda Octavia will do pretty much everything you would want. Or people buy Ferraris etc when you can't use them on the road.

Watches are mens jewelery - what woman would turn down a 5k diamond ring that does absolutely nothing, and is almost indistinguishable from a CZ yet if you spend 5k on a watch people thing you are potty and take great glee in telling you their £15 casio tells the time.

Why even bother with a £500 rotary (less winder), go for a cheapo casio.

When people have a bit of extra cash to spend they they buy these kinds of 'illogical' things cos they can.

You can get a good winder for a lot less than 500 quid.

You can, for sure, but a watch and a winder (especially if it's a travel winder or something like that), then it may tip the balance in the decision for me.
