Hamilton Watches? Any good?
Discussion
I've been looking for a new watch after my last one died a death and nothing has really taken my fancy. Until I saw this
So are they any good?
I've been looking at Breitlings and Omega's etc and this is a lot more reasonable and imho much better looking. The only thing is, I've never heard of them.
Mind you that doesn't mean much, as I know absolutely stuff all about watches apart from the difference between digital and analogue.........

Well the Hamilton Watch Company was founded in 1892 and used to make pocket watches. Hamilton's claim to fame is that they were the company that produced the worlds first Battery powered wrist watch back in 1957 (The Hamilton Electric 500), so the name does have a pretty long history.
These days the Hamilton name is owned by the swatch group (surprise surprise ) and use variations of Swatches own swiss made ETA movement. Since swatch took over they have managed to put the watch in several films including things like Men in Black (featured the Hamilton Ventura) and Lethal Weapon.
I personally own one the limited edition "Hamilton X-01"
...and I love it. Very well made and very accurate. It may look a little "out there" but thats because it is a reproduction of the prototype watch that Hamilton designed for the movie 2001. There are only 2001 made (mine is 1196 IIRC).
It's good enough that I would happily buy another from the Hamilton range. Recomended from me (and like I said, I own one)

So I don't get accused of being all NTB I will say that I do research every watch I buy quite thoughly, I didn't have to ask my Dad anything
Had a look at THIS ONE in a jewelers recently and it seemed quite a nice piece. Retialed for around £300. I quite like the simplicity of it and it did feel like a reasonable watch. Hamilton claim to have been around for a good while, call them selves `The Origional American Watch` and have also desgined a watch for Elvis (the funny triangle one in their range)
M3J.
They did not design the Ventura shape (funny triangle one) for Elvis at all, the watch already existed. However, it was one of the first examples of product placement used to sell a wrist watch.
In the film "Blue Hawai" the Hamilton in question was actually the original Hamilton Electric (first ever commercial battery powered wrist watch) released on Janurary 3rd 1957.
The movie actually came out in 1961.
Like I said, I tend to research every watch I buy, makes me very geeky at times, really impresses the ladies though
As for Hamilton prices... you might want to look online with the dolar where it is. I bought my X-01 from the USA (New Jersey) and paid less than half the UK retail. At the time for the UK ticket price it was a case of replace the dollar sign with a pound sign, then add another hundred. I think things might have stabilised a bit, but still worth looking

Not at all, makes you an enthusiast of the finest degree Nothing wrong with doing research before parting with your hard-earned. If you didn't, I'd probably put you down as a plonker!
I'm off to look at the watch tomorrow and see if it suits me. I'm hopeful though as it is the only watch that I've looked at that made me go "Oooh". All the Breitlings made me go "Ugh".
