It's my brother's 21st birthday in a few months and I'm probably going to buy him a watch. Looking to spend around £800. Any suggestions?

Relativley unusual, hard as nails and great brand.
£50 over budget but worth every penny http://www.aatime.com/p/omega/seamaster/quartz-black-dial-black-bezel-ss-bracelet.html

Omega is a good choice, should be able to negoiate a deal for your money off the high street, for a similar quartz seamaster,

but i would also check out for the money you have to spend, an Oris, you should also with a bit of carefull dealing get a good watch, try not to pay RRP, ask for a deal on the highstreet, and walk if you do not get one, do not expect miracles or internet price match, but you should get safe, peace of mind purchase and try it for fit first.

Good luck.

Tag Heuer? The aqua racer chronograph is around that sort of price.

I would go for a used Omega at that price point. Cheap, reliable, easy to service and will last. I bought a 1950's automatic at auction a couple of years ago for about £400 if I remember correctly. It rarely gets worn because I find it too small but it always starts running when it is worn and keeps great time for a 50 year old watch! There are no shortage of dealers out there selling vintage Omega so you will be able to find something in your price bracket. If you are based in London check out the new used Omega shop in Burlington Arcade.

Secondhand opens up a completely different set of ideas, but assuming new does the OP want a chronograph or simple watch for his money? Secondly, does he want quartz with guaranteed accuracy or mechanical with less accuracy but the kudos? If mechanical then the Sinn range might be an option here.

Not necessarily after a chrono. I like the style of the tag monacos but they're a little out of my price range. Not overly concerned with accuracy. Looking for something not too flashy that will last.

Fine, but who actually wants a hand wound watch as opposed to an automatic these days? I think despite being a fine looking watch, I still prefer Sinn (and their quality as reported in this forum) at the price.
Under budget too.

I think for the sub £1k market Omega are a tried and trusted bet. It won't be a chronograph but will be a 'lifetime' watch.

You could get a Breitling for that money too, I have one and they are immaculately made pieces.

Failing that perhaps a used watch from Bell & Ross would be something different.

Me. smile I have that watch and a Sinn

I love handwound watches, they are so involving.

And some of the world's finest watches are handwound, e.g. JLC Reverso Duo, all Dornbluths, etc.
