oh, look
Though personally I'd go secondhand and be looking for a JLC or an Omega DeVille Co-Axial Chronograph or a Zenith Class Sport.
Does rather depend on what you like though ...

However, being a watch neophyte, I've never heard of either.
Any background/information?

I've just ordered a Stowa Marine Original after first seeing it in Tertius' post here. Have a look at www.stowa.de for information. This is a german watch, powered by a swiss made Unitas movement (which you'll find inside plenty of high end and much more expensive Swiss timepieces). They have something of a devoted following and a reputation for being high quality but not so high priced. They remind me a little of an IWC Portuguese, but at less than 10% of the price...However, being a watch neophyte, I've never heard of either.
Any background/information?
The brand is a very old one, recently resurrected by a German watchmaker who is producing pieces which reflect many of the original designs.
You can only buy direct from the manufacturer, but have a look at the Jorg Stauer/Stowa forum on watchuseek.com for plenty of hight quality pictures and owner impressions.
As for your original question, what sort of watch do you want? What will you use it for and how often will you wear it? Do you intend to swim with it, or can it be treated more delicately? There's plenty of choice out there, and even more opinion on what you should spend it on, but some guidance as to what you want would help steer you in the right direction.]
Oh, and I can recommend the Omega Speedmaster pro. I bought mine in December and absolutely love it, even if it has no date and can't be worn when doing the washing up. It is a classic piece of watch design that endures. Like wearing a Jaguar E-Type on the wrist; full of inconsistency, but still beautiful after all these years.

My Stowa MO arrived just before Christmas. It was purely the result of the thread you started - I had never heard of them before then. It's on my wrist now and it's fantastic, I'm very pleased, in particular I love the hands, and the huge glass back. So thanks

Put half towards a Milgauss. I know, I know, but I want one so much I'd be happy to forego something lesser in pursuit of it.
yes im with you on that one,i love that watch so much, i was quoted 18 months wait for one with 700GBP deposit, but so many watches to chose, i will not be putting 3.4k in a rolex anytime soon.but for 1.5k my advice would be omega,
either a planet ocean or a speedmaster, stunning and deals on new to be had if you have 1.5 to spend, grab a good deal.

Well, since the Stowa MO has been brought to my attention, I am not so sure.Originally, I would have said that I was purely looking for something that I could wear in dressy settings, being a bit of a foody. However, looking at the lovely Stowa, it looks like it would fit the bill both in a dress and a casual settings.
Since the Stowa is only for only £600, I guess I can afford to purchase a second piece for purely casual occasions. Maybe the Sinn?

I think the Stowa is great too.
if your really not fussed what you have at this time of year I would hit the high street shops with that budget, today in Ernest Jones they had one of the Tag watches from 1895 down to 1295 and an Omega from 1550 down to 1200.
Can remember the models and neither really caught my eye but everybodies taste is different.
I got my Tag Carrera last year where all I wanted was a nice watch and as it had 800 from list price that was the reason I got it.
