Hi all,

I've been offered a full-size Seamaster for a good price, but have e couple of questions:
1) is there somewhere I can check the serial number before I buy the watch - there's nothing obvious on the Omega site
2) this is the Seamaster professional automatic, but looking at Omega's site, there are loads of different Seamasters - is the difference just the movements, depth ratings and slightly different styles, or is there more history than that
3) finally - a slightly odd question - previously I've not really considered full-sizers as the one time I tried one it looked too big on me, however, having tried this one on I think it looks OK (of course that could just be availability having a psychological effect!) - still though, I'd like to build up my wrists a bit - has anyone done this with any success?

Yes, Googling the Web does partially answer some of these questions, but it doesn't have the kudos of the official Pistonheads answers! ;-)

Cheers in advance, CH

1) See here http://www.omegawatches.com/index.php?id=438 the first of the FAQs tells you how to find out if it s genuine.
2) yep - pretty much it really - material its made of as well, SS vs gold etc.
3) just wearing the watch will build up your wrist :-)

I know - at least I didn't post it in the pie and piston...
...incidentally, will definately be getting something (if not this one) before April next year as I found out I got a first in my OU degree last night and I've decided I'm worth it (as L'Oreal keeps telling me!).

There's always the titanium version of the Seamaster which presumably is a bit lighter....wink

It's not the weight, it's the physical size of it! For a reasonable sized bloke (6ft, 15st), I seem to have ... if not skinny, then not chunky either - wrists, which has in the past led me to look at the reduced size models. However, since the last time I tried one on (maybe 2 or 3 years ago), I've put on a bit of weight (and 18 months of picking up my kids has helped too) and the full-size now seems to look OK - especially as it's supposed to be a big watch.

To build up your wrists try using one of those gyroscopic wrist exercisers - google "neon powerball".

I've got one of those!
Do they work then? - I bought it ages ago when I used to be able to buy internet-junk (i.e before kids), but I've never really had the motivation to use it regularly.

Use them before my week-long flyfishing trips each year and they really do tone the wrist & forearm.

Whether they build muscle mass is another matter - maybe reverse liposuction is the way to go there!

I've another question, what cards/papers should the watch come with - it's got the red inner and white outer boxes, the leather card holder with the international warranty which has the watch number on it and that matches the one stamped on the watch itself; but looking online some seem to have extra cards (pictograms? something else?) which I don't remember seeing (I think that there was one other card there, but I don't recall what).
Also the operating instructions are paperback - again looking on line at watches from 2002 some seem to have the hardback book, some paperback.
Finally the actual model is the 2254.50.00 Seamaster Professional Chronometer.

Looking about it seems that at £550 this is a good buy, it's in absolutely mint condition - only worn on special occasions, etc...

Any more thoughts?

Nice looking watch in good colour Black/Black, price also seems very good.

Try on for size as this is a mid sized watch (39.3mm) and can look a little small compared to the majority of Seamasters (41-45mm).

Hardback or Paperback instructions, no real issue as it depends on the watch and production date. Cards that should come with the watch are:

International Warranty Card stamped and dated by the original retailer along with Ref No. & Watch No.

Pictograms Card showing Ref No. & Calibre No.

Chronometer Certificate showing Ref No. & Watch No.

Cheers cableguy, I'm pretty certain that there was only one other card there - but I also seem to remember somewhere on the Omega Website that says you can get the chronometer certificate upon request - I wonder if for some reason this hasn't always been standard issue? The watch was sourced from las palmas (well that's the dealer stamp, can't get the dealer name itself because the ink has sort-of run/splurged over the years)...
Everything else is fine though, and as for the size - see my first post and my possibly inadvisable comment about building up my wrists(!)... second edit: - looking on the Omega site, this reference says the watch is full size (41mm)

CH

ETA: So what are people's feelings on the price for a private sale? Is £550 about right? Or is it quite a bargain at that? Seems good to me - with the benefit being that I can look plenty and am in no rush to do a deal - it'll still be there in 3 months time.

To be honest, I've not seen them at anywhere near that - best haggling head gets a new one at a grand (from an AD), but that's still £400 over budget... Also if I had 850 to spend I'd be looking at a s/h speedmaster instead.
