tag carrera or omega speedmaster
Discussion
being new to all this watch buisness i,m a little bewildered by it all.
really i,d like a breitling navitimer but at this time i cant warrent just north of 2k for a pre owned and really for that money choice seems limited anyway.
so as a starter watch i,m looking for something a little more reasonable.
i really like the tag carrera watches(black or white face) and i think i prefer them to the speedmasters.
it seems i could pick up a pre owned carrera for about 1k or even get a new one from the states for 1k.
any suggestions or anyone have one for sale?
my main question being are tag and omega actually any good? ive seen a few 'shame its a tag' comments.
i feel that tags are very 80,s (for some reason) but the carrera series look like more of a modern classic imo

Hmm. Having just been through exactly the same dilemna (and settled for the Speedmaster) some thoughts.
- I found the carrera's body slightly out of proportion, particularly to the metal bracelet. Hard to describe further but I felt as if the bracelet were just a bit too narrow for what is really quite a big (particularly in height) lump of watch.
- I know that the Carrera is a classic, but the Omega just pips it for me in terms of reputation. Go for the base model (with the hesalite crystal) and you are wearing a watch that is pretty much unchanged since the 60s. Purists - yes I know the movement is the same as the cal.321, but in most other respects...
Ultimately the choice is yours and you have to be happy wearing the thing. No matter what us idiots say, there's no substitute for going into a jewellers and trying them both on. That's what made my mind up for me.

i may just go and try them on then.they both look very similar imo but from pictures the carrera pips it-though i see what you're saying about the bracelet.
i have seen a nice breitling a43030 navitimer eclipse from 2000,it has a brown leather strap though i,d prefer bracelet.was actually on ebay for £1700 and never sold.
would the navitimer be a good buy,i have the sellers details-personally i really like it,obviously no one else did for the price

is that a good buy or stick to tag/omega for now?

Hmm, I would say the Tag is a re-edition of a classic whereas the (handwound) Speedmaster Pro isa classic.really i,d like a breitling navitimer but at this time i cant warrent just north of 2k for a pre owned and really for that money choice seems limited anyway.

I agree that newer Tags are a significant improvement, but they still carry that "more marketing than content" image for me.
Speedmaster for me, or original Heuer Carrera (but that's probably out of budget).

Speedmaster for me as it's the real thing without pretention. Anything with TAG written on it reminds me of chavs. But I do quite like the original Heuer Carrera and the recreations TAG made a few years ago WITHOUT adding the TAG branding. For me this totally ruins an otherwise classic watch.
Funnily enough on Spooks the other night, there seemed to be a little watch placing going on. For the first time I noticed that Adam was wearing the Carrera, which they focused on on a couple of occasions and Harry had a speedmaster, which also got a couple of close ups.
Looks like they couldnt decide either!
Speedy for me
