Automatic Watch – right for me…?
Discussion
I’ve been looking at a new watch for a while, was going to spend about £1300, but now think I can stretch to about £2000. Thing is, this new price now opens up a vast array of nice automatic watches, initially I was going for a nice quartz.
The trouble is (due to my property renovation business) I normally spend most of the week covered in either plaster, paint or some form of dust, therefore will only be wearing my (nice) watch at weekends, and some evenings.
Is it a waste for me to buy an automatic watch, as it will spend most of the week within a winder. Is this wise? I’ve heard stories of winders damaging main springs, parts etc…
Anyone else have experience of this, or should I just stick to a Quartz.?

Sorry to sit on the fence, but once again, personal preference.... If you don't mind an auto covered in dust, get a Citizen or something, and have something nice for the weekends in a winder.
Personally I can't get enough of auto/mechanical watches. There is something so pleasing about them.

Why not just wear it to work ? Many in this price range are damn tough and near enough hermetically sealed to start with! Anything waterproof is going to be unaffected by dust, and crystal is very hard to scratch (often harder than the bezel).
If you absolutely must wear a £5 Casio in the day-time, a winder is fine. But wearing the nice one evenings and weekends might be enough. Or (sacriledge!) let it go flat and wind it!
Somewhere, a purist is thinking "Burn Him!"

Silly question I know. But when I buy something I buy it because I like it, not really based on price (unless I can't afford it). Seems weird to decide that you want a watch, then set a price, then go up to it.
Or is that just me being odd?

Two grand is a hell of a good budget.
I would personally look for two watches (or more) with that amount to spend. Maybe a Sinn for a really tough mechanical auto as your daily wear and something a little special (Stowa MO perhaps ...) as your evenings/weekends watch. That would be WAY under your budget.
(this thread has no bearing on my suggestions of course ...)
If you are willing to go secondhand you could get something really fantastic like a JLC and a Sinn in that budget.
