I've seen a few vintage rolexes on ebay coming in at around the £500-£600 mark .
eg

seems like a bargain at this price, what do people think of these as investments. Do prices generally go up

it looks good, and on the money, not a bargan though, not so sure if it is an investment, but its a nice watch to own.

Be careful - the vintage Rolex market is a fickle one and tastes can change quite quickly.

At the moment it's the vintage sports models that have the greatest growth potential - Subs, GMT's, Daytonas, Explorers, etc. Most of these are very expensive already and may not grow in value as quickly as they have in the last couple of years.

Buy a watch you love and will wear - not as an investment. If you do decide to speculate, make sure you do your research REALLY well! If a Rolex is cheap, it's either fake or there is no demand for that model in the marketplace.

This has got me wondering on the prices of mine.

Haven't got it to hand (sic), but its either a late 40s, or early 50s Oyster Perpetual Milgaus, it was me grandads, passed onto me dad, then onto me. Had a valuation on it about 12 years back, and it was around £2k then, but looking at some sites, it could be worth more, although it is maybe a little "tired" (ie. used), but totally original.

  • edit* - its late 50s.
  • another edit* - its a Milgauss 6541. I think its rarety value may have shot up through the roof since I had it valued.

Wish I hadn't started looking .... a google for "rolex milgauss 6541", found one that went for auction is switzerland a few years back.

The price kinda scared me, but it does show how the market seems to change.

There's a new Milgauss out, so it's hot property right now if you have an old one.

Not right now, but I'll see if I can get a few put up tonight.

Its very definitely one of the originals, I've seen a few pics and info on sites :

That is very definitely what I've got sat in a desk at home. Its got a little worn - the numbers around the bezel are worn, the bezel doesn't rotate.

I couldn't ever consider selling it though, but at the some of the prices that are floating around, its close on an indecent proposal. I should keep it regardless of the cost though, and hand it down to my son as and when.

Better image :

Its never really stood out as being a truly good looking watch. Although the legendary build quality means it feels incredibly good, ticks away beautifully, but isn't particularly accurate any more.

Give it a good scrub with some mild soap and a soft bristle brush, and dry it off.

It'll look a million dollars!!

At the rate they've gone up since I first had it valued, that could almost be true!

Either that, or get it sent back to Rolex for a service / clean?

It will come back looking brand new. They will replace anything worn. I think it looks better with age/patina.

Will have to check out some watchmakers then; pretty sure I took it to a place in Reading all them years back, doubt there will be somewhere reputable around. It'll have to be early next year though.

Speak to Tim at www.watches.co.uk in Chiswick.

He'll value it for you. I buy my watches from them.
