Does anyone have experience of how collectible the current Eterna PD watches are? eg:

Hell of a price come down. Personally I don't like spending that kind of (original) money on non-established makers (or 'names').
But it's got a lot off.... if you like it and can afford it, why not?

Eterna not an established maker? Pass the crack Don, that's good stuff you're on.

Sorry, should explain myself better.
IMHO, I don't really want to spend that kind of money on watches from manufactuers like Mont Blanc, Porsche Design (etc), as they do some things very well - but for me, watches are a step too far. Mont Blanc make lovely pens, but cufflinks, perfume, luggage, watches and everything else on top - not for me. Porsche Design - phones, pipes and now watches have all been on the radar recently - all part of the porker lifestyle. It just strikes me as a higher class of tat as sported by the chavs walking around looking like 'Ferrari' billboards (even if it is counterfit!).
I like my watches to be either quirky (and fit with the image - see Oakley), or established names. Yes, the Porker watches are lovely. And I do have a real hankering after a Mont Blanc. But I can't bring myself to spend that much money on them. I'd much prefer to have something either more 'honest', or 'established'. If you can see where I'm going?
I can realise that might point of view might not be recognised, or even popular. But that is the reasoning behind my poorly described comment! * Takes a big hit of rock and passes the pipe to Rich *
Ah, but there is a big difference between someone like Mont Blanc getting into the watch business and a long established firm like Eterna making a branded watch.
You're take would rule out the Aston Martin edition JLCs. Now, you wouldn't want to do that, would you?
I was right by the way. That is good stuff.
Passes pipe back.

Apparently MB have been in the watch business for a while, and according to QP Mag, they are looking to move upmarket?
I realise the Porker pieces have superb name movements, but apart from Horologists, how many people are going to know that?
As for the JLC - established (known) brand putting out a named item. I'd have them in a heartbeat (as long as you're buying!), but more in my range would be the Breitling Bentleys... I'll pass on the Panerai Ferrari's though...

Don, you seem to be missing something old fruit.
Eterna are a long established watchmaker, with their own range of watches - the KonTiki is a classic.
See here - www.eterna.ch
They are just the latest who have tied up with PD - previously that has included IWC. The collabortaion with eterna went a bit further - Porsche now own them.

I can see that (it's always good to learn new things), but outside of a horologist, who is going to know that?
I must admit, I didn't realise just what a serious piece of kit it (PD), is. Elevates it slightly in my eyes, but I'm still (foolishly) put off by the name. It's got to do it for me really...
At the end of the day, unless you are seriously knowledgeable about watches, you are going to buying for the looks and the name - not the movement or history.
But I would change my first post - it's a good pice, and a lovely looking watch. Just the name (still) put me off - IMO of course!

Bugger. Another hole in my argument - Porsche Design, and the car maker are related in name only, not business wise (apparently).
So Rich, thank you for seeing me straight. To the OP, it's lovely, and looks cheap for a stunning piece of work.
I'm now going to go home, and stop talking out of my own arse. Good night everyone!

I'm not often here and sorry for butting in, but PD was taken into the Porsche Family either late 2006 or early 2007. Its now a subsidiary of the Brand, having been set up as a completely separate design consultancy. So Rich, thank you for seeing me straight. Just to add a little to the background Eterna were the company who developed the "five ball" bearing typically used for auto rotors - hence the logo on their own-brand watches. They are definitely a "name" with history, though also definitely not first division. (Well except in the current footballing sense ... )
I used to have a vintage Eterna dress watch - very nice indeed. Not handled any of their PD watches though.

I hate heavily marketed, lifestyle, sponsor branded watches. Ferrari and Porsche seem to be the kings of slapping their name on just about everything and anything. How much of a tt would you look driving down the road in your 911, wearing a Porsche design watch and Porsche design clothing?

Porsche Design watches are made by IWC I believe? Unless their license has been revoked.
According to one of the earlier posts, they're made by Eterna and used to have links with IWC. I'm a big Porsche fan, but this is just marketing BS. Almost as bad as those Porsche design mountain bikes!Gassing Station | Watches | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
