If watches were cars...
Discussion
I'm sure I saw someone on here make an amusing remark about TAG Heuer being the BMW of the watch world. I'm sure it's the ubiquity that was being referred to rather than purely a snobbish remark (at least that's how I interpretted it).
Taking that further do we agree that the Rolex Submariner is the Porsche 911 of the watch world and does that make Rolex = Porsche?
TAG Heuer = BMW (F1 = 3-series ???)
Rolex = Porsche (Sub = 911, Daytona = 911 Turbo ???)
Seiko = Honda
Can anyone think of any more?

Tag Heur = VAG surely
IWC= BMW
Yeh I'd go with that.IWC= BMW
TAG - Golf - Passat (too many Quartz models to be in the BIG League)
Omega - Audi A3 - A6 (not sure about the entry level on this one)
Breitling - Audi A3 - A6 (ditto above)
Seiko - Toyota - Aygo - flagship Lexus (huge range)
IWC - BMW 3 - 5 (struggled with this one - from an image point of view I think it sits with Audi as BMW can be seen as cars for nob's but engineering wise I think it fits more with BMW)
Audemars/Patek/Vacheron - Rolls/Bentley (old boys with class
Lange - Maybach - for the Russian oligarc
Breguet/Blancpain/Glaschutte/JLC - Jaguar, top end Mercs, A8, BMW 7
Panerai - old Audi TT - good but possibly not as good as it thinks - Golf in a fancy suit.
Lets hear your reasoning its more fun then.

Panerai - Merc AMG = Very big and powerful but not to subtle.
Breitling - Nissan Skyliner = Lots of technology to make it perform, lots of dials on the dash no one really understands.
IWC - Alpina/RUF = Taking someone else basic components and improving them into a better package.
Breguet - Maybach = An old brand brought back by a volume manufacture as a low volume/high margin premium brand

Entertainingly eccentric. But what time is it ?Rolex = BMW, IMO. The no-thought default choice of the hoi-polloi.
Personally I think the Urwerk is one of the most entertaining movements out there. It looks so fantasticly over complicated but it's actually the opposite. Mind you the 6 figure price kinda drops into the "unobtainable" bracket. Something to do with the case being made of solid platinum and the fact that they are only making 25 of the Blackshark.
Apart from the limited number issue it's very clearly the Veyron of the watch world.

TVR would have to be beautiful, eccentric, Russian, and broken. Poljot?
Clearly never owned a Poljot then if your trying to imply that they are unreliable. I have 2 and they are superbly made and keep better time than all the other mechancical watches I own.Seiko = VW Beetle? Sold in millions and just plods on forever.
I must say I find this entertaining but can we go even further? They say a master becomes like his dog (or the other way round) so - what type of character wears which watch? Is an IWC wearer (me!) deep thinking and classy or just plain conservative and boring? And how do you class owners of the other makes. I'll duck back behind the parapet now................ flak incoming
