Anybody have an opinion (hey, this is PH - EVERYBODY has an opinion wink ) on the value of a 2001 Rolex Sea-Dweller.

Needs a new bezel insert to be 100% mint, has the box but no papers (although is 100% genuine).

Opinions? £1,500?

Mine, 75 circa, is valued for 2.5k, if that helps. Take into your local Rolex dealer, they will check it out and give you a valuation, and of course, tell you it is genuine!.

2 dealers offered me £1,500 today (cash not trade), so it seems they are on the money and aren't robbing me blind!

I'm selling my modern watches and am concentrating on vintage, although it will mean fewer watches I think I will enjoy them more as a hobby. I sold my Planet Ocean the other day and don't miss it at all.

Hopefully I'll be able to find a couple of nice vintage rolexes to replace my modern stuff with!

Well assuming they are all the same, the serial number is (I think) on the body of the watch between the horns for the pins, which with the stainless strap is hidden until the strap is taken off.

Not knowing where your came from, just bear in mind that the millsubs were made for the military, and such Rolex may have Serial numbers, as do they for all if "owners" report theirs stolen etc. God forbid I am implying yours is not above board of course.

Do tell if you find the serial number.

Alternately drop my pal a line, email on the web site.

Easy, take off the bracelet at 6 o'clock to reveal the 7 figure case number. I use wooden cocktail sticks as they do not mark, press into the hole on either side of the case 'horns' to release the bracelet.
You can check the case number against any of a number of published tables, such as;

http://www.preownedrolex.com/images/html/dateyourr...

To determine the age of the watch. Do you have an image of yours?

Hi Dominic,

1978 does that make it vintage, is it worth more?

Vintage is probably any model which is discontinued. A 5513 is definitely vintage and is probably worth a few hundred quid more than a secondhand current model - although prices are rising.

I saw a lovely red sub today... I think I know what my first vintage Rolex buy will be!

Edited to say I did the deal at £1500 - lost a bit but haggled hard when I bought so not too much. One thing which suprised me was that I didnt need to provide any real proof of ID - I had no papers and a box i could have bought online. There must be squillions of stolen Rolexes being 'fenced' through reputable dealers.

And there's a little story, keep it short. Pal I knew brought his wife a "used" gold Rolex from a shop in London, about £5000.

Year later took it into Rolex dealer for a service, next day, two "Gentlemen" knock on his door, CID.

Turns out the watch was stolen in a raid, the old lady pretty battered up. Upshot, the Rolex was returned to the lady from whom it was stolen from. "What about my 5k" he asked, "Your problem sir".

He nipped back to shop, GONE. He muttered something like "Golly gosh".

Rolex keep a database of lost or stolen pieces at their UK office. Any reputable dealer/store selling used Rolex should have checked with Rolex UK before they buy the watch in for stock. Rolex will also check against an international list. Anyone can check a watch they are thinking of buying with Rolex UK, the phone number is 01322 553434.

Hope this helps.
