Okay then....my second thread
Discussion
Having done some reading up about swapping my TAG Mercedes SLR watch, I'm going to flog it then go and buy an older watch which should hopefully appreciate in value over years to come...
Which in your opinion is one of the best appreciating watches at the moment if I put my budget between £2000 to £5000, big range I know but am keen to buy a watch to both appreciate myself and for IT too appreciate also!
I've currently taken a fancy to a Rolex Red submariner which I've seen mentioned numerous times and like the look of.....
Cheers in advance......

Not overly regularly no....have a longines for daily wear...and just want a quality watch for the odd occasion but ultimately an appreciating item hopefully...
Your best bet for future appreciation would be to buy a used Rolex Anniversary Submariner for £2.5k ish! Rolex will soon be discontinuing this model when the new (and larger/more expensive) Submariner comes out in a few months time. The 16610LV is destined to become a classic!!
I have a Laureato Evo 3 in stainless with blue face (no numbers just markers)- very nice
At the moment I am in love with the GP Laureato Big Date/Moon - I would gladly swap my Evo 3 for one of these.
I also like the Sea Hawk with power reserve
all fine watches and 'big league' as well cos they do their own movements.
I wouldn't buy brand new - they loose a lot for some reason.

appreciation is very different to holding its value.
A bargain second hand rolex (or new daytona) has to be the way to go if you are after potential uplift on prices but I think you a crazy to buy on this basis.
The great thing about a good mechanical watch is they all have decent residuals and will always be worth a good % of what you paid. I think that once people start buy on the basis of what the watch will be worth in 10 years times then some of the joy of watches is lost.
I compare it to cars. Thats why there are so many silver 911's on the road and not enough orange/yellow/red etc etc. Everyone is to worried about trade in values.

Does that mean that the new Sub will be > 40mm diameter? Is any more info available anywhere?I have a MY1998 GMT Master (black bezel) which is dwarfed by my Fortis B42 Chrono. I know the GMT has a smaller crown and is not as tall as the Sub but it has the same diameter dial and bezel.
Get the earliest Speedmaster you can find/afford which has the orginal bracelet, box and papers. IMO that will be a surefire to rise in the future.
Failing that, early Rolex GMTs are undervalued at the moment IMO. The Subs and Sea-Dwellers are getting pricey so people will be looking for the next best thing soon.
