Have wanted a Luminor for a while but I reckon Paneria are not sufficiently niche anymore, can anyone suggest a real left field watch?

Thanks

Still Panerai.

One of the best in the world and still not seen everywhere.

All IMHO of course.

If you want something NOBODY recognises, go for a Credor...wink

if you happen to have a spare £100k lying around, I would lovingly look after a Spring Drive Sonnerie for you wink

Buy a Panerai because you want a Panerai, not becasue they are niche.

I own a PAM177 and it is beautifully made, really much better quality than my Omega SMP. They are also completely unique in the way that they look and feel. That is why people love them.

The base movement Panerai use is the Unitas 6497, Besides the Unitas movement, Panerai also use a JaegerLeCoultre movement in a couple of models (8 days and 10 days I believe). Automatic models mostly use the universal Valjoux 7750 movement.

panerai are so cool, spend loads of time pouring over brochure, so many to choose, they are all stunning. they are not common (yet)

But I like Bell & Ross, not to common, quality, and not to expensive (relativly)

Space 3 for me,

however i really want a Rolex oyster Milguass in Steel with black dial,Green sapphire crystal and polised bezel,

really badly, in fact it is the only rolex i like or i would ever own, and keep. If (when) i had (have) a ss daytona, i would sell it straight on, but the Milguass is a keeper

Quality post, sir.

Mrs Mastiff bought me a PAM111H for my 40th and I absolutely love it. smile

I think this uses the Unitas movement (it is not an automatic), but I bow to superior knowledge on this one.

Wear it every day and if for any reason I neglect to put it on, I really miss it!

Mastiff, you are a gent.

I usually wear my Omega as my daily beater (apart form when washing the M) and putting the Pannie on never fails to be a special moment.

We must be watch twins, I too have a smp and a 177, but I really dont think there is much to choose in quality between the 2, they are quite different watches too, I would doubt the 177 would stand up to being a beater as well as the smp and remember the list on a smp was £1200, the list on the 177 is £2750 before the price rise and thats Seadweller money

May I firstly complement you on your excellent taste wink

One of the things that I enjoy most about watches is the fact that no two people's opinions are the same. I find my 177 a totally different beast to the SMP (that is why I love them both) but in terms of build quality, whilst the SMP is great, the fit and finish of the 177 is superior.

Still, I think that we have two superb watches, and I for one am a very happy bunny.

As a Panerai owner of 4 years, I am spotting them on wrists a lot more than I used to and lets face it, they are hard to miss. I was even in a minicab the other day and the taxi driver had a fake on (I assume it was a fake, the glass and strap looked odd and cheap"

I must admit I liked the exclusivity but it worries me less these day. I went from niche to classic and bought an nice big IWC Portuguese.

If you like Panerai because they are big and manly then an IWC pilots watch is cool. I love the Bell and Ross instrument watches and have never seen one on a wrist but it is only a matter of time. Very few dealers in the UK which may keep things exclusive.

If you like Panerai because they where a little leftfield then you may like to look at the Manometre watch - very interesting. Ikepod are also very funky

I quite like the look of the French BRM watches - very interesting and decent price.

If you want big military then the Uboat stuff is interesting looking though it could be accused of being a bit derivative of Panerai

If you are very wealthy then you can buy exclusivity. for £5k plus I like some of the JLC watches. For £10k plus Richard Mille

PS.

I did like the look of the Graham watches but they somehow felt cheap in the flesh. finish was not as nice as the Panerai and for big watches they lacked weight. (IMO)

Also check out Kobold and there is some new brit brand of nice pilots watches, test by Ewan macgregor and Charlie Borman on their way around the world.

Danny

Great recommendation on the Richard Mille pieces - I nearly recommended them myself but they are so expensive. Would have to be one of my dream watches though.

Also agree on the Graham watches - name bought by (I think) a foreign comapny to trade on an old British name and the results are pretty average.

I have only ever seen 1 real Panerai in the wild and 1 moody 1, the real 1 was in Bond st, and the fake was because he wanted a Panerai but didnt want the wait, he also has a Hublot BB (real)

If you want niche but dont want to pay a fortune then maybe take a look at Anonimo

Big Bang are PROPER niche - and not a niche that appeals to me. A bloke at work has one and I tried it on but, whilst I see the the work that has gone into it, they just did not feel like a 5k watch.

Interestingly, Anonimo are made by a group of ex-Panerai employees.

I love Panerai, and have been looking for a decent 8 day one for a while. Or even a PAM 90. But like people say, not so exclusive now. What do people think of a basic steel AP Royal Oak instead?
