Ok you lot have inspired me to start a collection! I'm surprised how much chat there is about inexpensive (couple of hundred quid) watches, thought it would all be about several thousand watches. So to the question, whats a good watch to start a collection in the under £500 bracket?

Ok showing my ignorance, really want an Omega (pref speedmaster) but thought I was looking at £1200 or there abouts? is £500 what I'd expect to pay for a pre owned one?

Depends entirely on the Omega. You wouldn't get a Speedie Moon for that, best price I've seen for those is around £900, private sale.

I started with a TAG, so they are a nice place to start. If you fancy something strange but cool, start with this one... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/OAKLEY-OTT-MODEL-10-193-TIME...

Seconded. Wearing mine today actually and it never fails to please. Very comfortable, not too heavy despite its size.

ps. Keeping the motoring theme I had a day off yesterday and saw a bang up to date edition of Overhaulin and noticed that Chip Foose wears one too (he has the silver face like mine)

Blowers jewelers - a pretty decent second hand dealer has a Omega Seamaster (james bond watch) for £640 although it is quartz.

They also have an automatic Speedmaster for £850. A bit more than your budget but a proper watch.

If you can buy automatic. There is a lot of brand snobery with watches but almost everyone will agree that a "proper" watch has to be mechanical. I personally dont like watches from non watch companies (Montblanc, Gucci etc). I am not alone here and this is reflected in second hand values.

Other watches to think about - Tag Aquaracer (not chronograph) automatic. Seen then around £600 new from reputable online dealers. Bought my dad one for Christmas a few years ago. Looks great in the flesh. Second hand Tag Carrera should be available for your budget. try watches.co.uk

The Oris watches look nice -Swiss and mechanical and with some in your budget

It depends why you're collecting really.

I know this is a bit "stating the obvious" so apologies, but you can have a very nice collection of the best timepieces by any number of criteria but IMO if you don't like wearing them or hate what they look like it's a waste of time and money.

You could start off buying bottom-price, less desireable second hand Omegas/Tags etc, or start collecting watches in a lower price band.

German watches (Sinn etc) are very good and have a history.

I was very impressed by the Olech & Wajs i saw someone recommend on this forum recently. Nice automatic divers divers watches.

Personally, I like Seikos - specifically the Japanese market only ones we dont get here. They aren't expensive, build quality & reliability is impeccable, and nobody else has one.
You can start with anything from a £50 limited edition Seiko 5 Automatic, to a £200-500 automatic Prospex diver, to a £2000 Grand Seiko.
