I went to look at/try a Pilot's Chronograph at a local jeweller this morning. The (very) nice girl implied that the owner would be willing to move on price somewhat. What's realistic here? 5%? It's at 2400.

Before anyone asks, I would have spoken to the owner but he wasn't there wink.

edit: Badly phrased. Should have said that this is the owner of the shop, not the watch. The watch is new.

I got ~10% off a titanium Panerai luminor marina, which is slightly harder to get a hold of...

Let them make you an offer, take 5% off it and see what they say?

Trouble is, that's overseas. I've also found it in the US for ~$2900. However, factor in shipping and potential customs charges and it doesn't look quite as attractive if I can get it for c£2100 from my local shop.

Go for 20% straight off, watches are wildly overpriced in this country.

post on timezone.com saying you want one but can't afford it and you don't really want to go on internet - any ideas?

You may find one of the Authorised Dealers or mods emails/pm you. One did with me when I was looking at a GP/IWC and they said they can get 20% minimum - all above board.

Therefore I reckon that even IF you get whacked for duty and VAT, you're looking at sub 1800GBP at current exchange rates....

There's your target (remember that the US dealers are still making sufficient profit even at that price).

wink

Bought my IWC in Miami at a IWC dealer, got a huge discount, they let me off the local sales tax too.

Worked out almost 1/2 price

Having done a bit more digging it seems that is a pre-owned (but not worn, apparently) watch. My Submariner was used, I think I want 'new' this time. Although from what I've seen in the last 48hrs it should be possible to get it <2k in the UK without too much trouble.

I paid £1960 at Heathrow airport (I think T3) in August last year fro my 42mm Spitfire Chrono, which is the same list price at £2400... Although I have never seen one at that price again in this country!

I've found out today that I'll be in Chicago in November. It might be worth waiting 'til then and canvassing some US dealers and the airport shops, I guess.

But then that opens a whole new kettle of fish with customs on the way home. redface

Send yourself the empty box, with an eBay type invoice for £25 or so for 'watch memerobilia' if you really want to cover yourself, and wear the watch.
