OK, now that I have two automatics one is at any one time unused and dead.

What is the procedure for restarting an automatic (other that just wearing it?). My new watch came with a note to wind it back and forth 50 times when restarting to power up the mechanism.

Also, are automatic winders worth getter?

Thanks in advance to the great and good of the watch forum.

I'm sure it's not technically the best but I just give mine a good shake and get on with it.

14 years in and it doesn't seem to have done it any harm.

Depends on which watch: if its your Big Time, I find mine gets going so easily I just "swirl" it round a few times to get the rotor turning and then put it on, it doesn't seem to need actual winding. Others I wind 10-12 turns and then just wear.

Handwinds I obviously wind right up.

Love by Big Time BTW. Have invested in some different straps and a deployment clasp from www.thestrapshop.co.uk.

Rapport do lovely winders in the £200 range. My Breitling sits on it 5 or 6 days a week in timed mode and keeps perfect time. Make sure you run it on mains though as mine eats batteries.

I can't hear it when it is under the bed but when it is on the bedside unit next to the bed I can hear the motor whirring softly.

Thank for that Mark.
Looks like I might get the cylinder type in black with silver top ring.

I have a 4 watch version and it varies depending on which watch is on which spindle.

I suspect you can grease them but haven't tried yet. Sadly it's not generally out on display (lovely looking things) so the noise isn't an issue.

Warning - unless you want additional encouragement to buy more watches, only buy one to cater for exactly how many watches you have less one (as you wear one so don't need that slot).
