Speedmaster 'Moon-Watch' Ltd Edition Question....
Discussion
Hi Guys, just been offered a brand new 1 of 1957 Omega Speedmaster watches in stainless for 4,600 GBP, including the leather flight jacket that comes with them. Has the HUGE presentation box, Crocodile strap included and all the tools - and they'll throw in the press pack and Speedmaster book too!
I have till Mon morning to make my decision. Is this a good buy? Will it keep value etc?
Need a wee bit of advice as it's not exactly cheap.... There's a couple of them here for sale, though I'll keep 'here' quiet till I get any replies.
Thanx,
J

stunning watch, if you really want it and it will make you happy, then it is worth it, not really rare enough and to early yet to be an investment, but hey you can not take it with you,
would i buy it, if i had the money, probably yes, but out of my current price range.
a s/steel daytona is the only investment at list 4.4K, due to the waiting list and desirability, you can shift it straight on for a profit.

Well I've seen Apollo 11, and "Snoopy" versions sell for well under £2k quite often before now (new in box with all papers, certificates etc) so I think the price is pretty damn high... unless its a very, very nice jacket
On this link you can see a pretty good indication of the average price for the different versions.....

In fact here is a proper Apollo 11 edition for £1350....

This watch is lovely as it has the Apollo 11 mission patch on the case back and you can see the date of the first moon landing on the face. Very nice
Good price for one of the most desirable versions (This or the Snoopy in my opinion).

Yeah, thanx guys, appreciate the comments.
Doesn't look like it may be the investment it's purported to be. The only differences seem to be the unique no. on the face (x of 1957), the face being enamelled rather than printed, the supply of the stainless band and the croc strap together with a tool kit to change them and that jacket - which is a nice leather bomber, good quality but has the large Seahorse logo and 'Omega Speedmaster' across the back and in the lining. Oh, and that MASSIVE wooden box!
I did call a dealer in London who'd sold 3 of these for 5225GBP though, and one did go at a Charity auction for 21,000 USD - which may be due to it being a charity doo where there's a level of drunken 'one-upmanship'!
Decisions, decisions....

The charity ss one was No. 1957 in a run of 1957, I think. The movement is also not the (1) 861 that the normal speedy pro's have.
Very few 'limited' edition speedmaster pro's gain value really. If any will it would be the one you're looking at. There was a thread on here by maxf on this watch a few months back. It also has details of the auction prices for the three models in that range.

It is the co-axel movement which they say is not going to be used in another speedmaster, ever. If that is true then it could have some future value IMO - obviously it could be used in every speedmaster made from 2008 onwards for all we really know! I passed on one, as it was just too much money - Id sooner put it towards a ceramic IWC (which I am doing).
The other side of the coin is that it is cheaper, nicer (IMO) and much rarer than a rolex daytona.

I started the other thread on 'Omega Geneva Service Standards' after the fantastic service I received whilst actually buying the watch. Final purchase price was a shade over £4,100, and for all the extras thrown in, it was a bargain for such a fantastic piece.

Apollo 11 on a cruise ship last week for $2550 ( about £1300). I was tempted.

I'm about to kick myself royally.
Was in NY last week and saw a 50th Anniversary Speedie for sale at $4000 USD. That was without local taxes but I'd not have had to pay them.
Given current exchange rates I was sorely tempted but couldn't remember what the prices back in the UK were like - so I walked.
It was displayed with all the other watches and the paper tag stated "special" box (not that I asked what "special" meant). I'm starting to think that I should have bit the bullet and bought the damn thing.
On the other hand, I could always get a cheap deal flight to NY to go get it! Unless someone thinks that's overpriced?

Hmm, chances are that was the one with the yellow/gold Seahorse emblem on the face which is a 50th anniversary (1 of 5957), but not the 'same' 50th anniversary (1 of 1957 & co-ax movement) with the numbered/enameled face & huge box. The one you're talking about was, IIRC £1750 in Geneva.
NY is nae usually cheap for new watches!

Thinking back, it didn't have a LE number on the front as I would have expected. Plus if it were one of the 1957 one's it would have been in a huge display case with all the goodies that go with it.
Still, was a nice watch though.
As for NY prices, I could have saved £300 off list price for an IWC, but I reckon I could have got that off the UK price through negotiation so I'd agree, no realsavings to be had.
