New Purchase - Something a little different
Discussion
Ok, it’s not your normal choice but my watch tastes have always been shall we say "eclectic". My newest purchase is a Hamilton X-01 "Odyssey" limited edition....
This watch was originally designed back in 1966 as a special commission by Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke. They approached several companies and asked them to create items that fitted in with the visual image of a certain (quite famous) Sci-Fi film he was making at the time. Hamilton were one of those companies and they produced a prototype watch very similar (in fact bar a few minor details, identical) to the one you see here. Kubrick loved it and commissioned them to make just a couple for the actors in said movie to wear. And that was that. Or at least it should have been. Last year Hamilton announced the X-01 as the production version of their 1966 prototype to celebrate 40 years of said Sci-Fi film (pretty obvious which film by now, if not it will be soon )
The quality of the watch is pretty stunning with all titanium construction, Automatic main movement (ETA2824 based I beleive) and 3 sub dials that are individual quartz ETA movements. The sub dials are actually set using a magnet that is hidden in the clasp of the watch, very retro.
Some detailed shots (not mine)....
Oh, and if you havent figured out which film.... lets just say the watch is limited to "2001" numbered copies
Now I've just got the agonising wait for the watch to arrive
Finally a picture requested by Gi Jnr from chatting last night. It’s a bit messy in this shot and has had a few additions but this is where I store the watches that get worn (I know this shot has been uploaded before so apologies if you’ve seen it already)

It seems to be 'Dream place time', is it a sci fi thing?
The watch has been released to mark the 40th aniversary of its comission for the movie "2001 a space Odessey". Hence being limited to only 2001 numbered copies. The prototype watch in the movie had the three sub dials marking "home time" "Dream place time" and "GMT". No clue what "Dream place time" is all about, but all three small faces on the production model are indepentant and can be set to what ever time zone you want. In the movie these small faces did not work.
Like I said, my taste is more eclectic than some here and to me this watch is one of those little milestones of design/thought/kudos that makes it instantly more interesting than pieces 3 or 4 times the price. Put simply whilst I love most of the watches talked about on this forum I will always try to make an effort not to limit myself to what others think I should buy and will always go from the heart, not the head.
I could buy a few "rated" watches then sit on them for years trying to turn a tidy sum. Or I could buy a watch designed to make others think I'm special or better than them, but both of those reasons are of little interest to me. I would rather buy a watch I love the look of, one that makes me sit up and take notice instantly because it stands out from the crowd and dares to do something different.

nice watch... A- Clarke was a very bad kiddy fiddler.
Maybe you should do some research and stop reading tabloids before posting such stupid accusations.....Research said:
In early 1998 Clarke was scheduled to be made a knight, with Prince Charles visiting Sri Lanka in order to make the investiture. Just before the ceremony, a British tabloid, The Sunday Mirror, claimed in a sensationalist story that Clarke was an avowed paedophile, giving supposed quotations from Clarke about the harmlessness of his predilection for boys. Clarke released a statement saying that "the accusations are such nonsense that I have found it difficult to treat them with the contempt that they deserve." He also said, "I categorically state that The Sunday Mirror's article is grossly defamatory and contains statements which in themselves and by innuendo are quite false, grossly inaccurate and extremely harmful." He later asked that the investiture of his knighthood be delayed "in order to avoid embarrassment to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales during his visit to Sri Lanka." In answer to the newspaper's allegations, Clarke was investigated by Sri Lankan authorities, with the accusations eventually being dismissed. The newspaper later printed a retraction and Clarke was made a Knight Bachelor on May 26, 2000, in a ceremony in Colombo, Sri Lanka
Funnily enough the Mirror withdrew the story when legal action was mentioned as being looked into by Clarkes lawyers... so they were so "sure" of themselves they got out before the case began and printed a standard single page retraction of thier entire claim thus avoiding any heavy payouts.Besides, this is the watch forum, you wanna troll about accused pedo's go and post in "pie'n'Piston".
