After many weeks considering what watch to buy next i decided to buy myself a Panerai. It wasn't until i started to try and sauce the model i wanted that i realized how difficult i was to get hold of one. I thought my only hope was Tourneau in New York but today i received a phone call from a UK jewellers saying that "the model i wanted was on its way, and did i want to leave a deposit"... Happy days.

I too will be joining the Panerai club soon bounce

This will be my final instalment in my little collection and will be the `Jewel-in-the-crown` or so to speak.

A fine choice sir and i hope you enjoy wearing it.

I know i probably will mate but at the minute thats `the one` !. It's a collection that if i want to keep extending then i'll have to start selling some cars.....and i really don't want to do that. hehe

Help me out a little here, I can't really see what makes Panerai watches so special...? What am I missing?

(and yes, I know you'll all say "Taste.".... laugh )

I really like the simplicity (sp?) and retro design. Other than my latest purchase all my other watches have a nice simple / plain design.

Yes there are probably other watches out there that are similar but it's all down to personal taste i suppose.

Where do Panerai watches tend to fall in the pricing brackets? Just 'expensive' or 'ohmigod, how much!?'?

Well see thats the thing, unless you knew what you were looking at there'd be little differance visually between a £2,500 model (the one i'm after) and a model worth getting on close to £10k

The model i'm after but with a black strap...

Hopefully this helps illistrate the point i'm trying to make. Clear as mud ! smile

Thanks for that, but it seems to be causing me a little more confusion! Here's the source of my confusion. A £10k watch doesn't keep time any better than a £2k watch (which often, as I understand it, keeps time worse than a cheap quartz Casio?). Ergo the reasons for choosing these watches are for reasons OTHER than keeping time, namely prestige and a sense of pride/enjoyment.

Thing is, I'd want my watch to LOOK like £10k's worth (as an example here, the £4k and £2.5k watches you reference, the £4k one looks the cheaper of the two to me!). Given that time-keeping isn't the primary reason here, I'd want it to LOOK the biz and the Panerai range is perhaps a little too subtle for my liking.

I'll draw an analogy here with high-end audio (a hobby of mine). My Naim gear is bland and ugly to look at, yet its stylistic shortfalls are more than made up for by its musical performance. Surely where performance is no longer the defining factor, style and/or desire must play a larger part?

You're right, at this sort of price bracket it's mostly all about style and desire. So if the £4K watch doesn't seem like £4K's worth to you, then you shouldn't spend £4K on it.

There are lots of different ways that something can look like £10K's worth, depending purely on the person looking at it. £10K's worth of restraint costs just as much as £10K's worth of bling.

A lot depends on the material it is made of.The casing my PAM 104 is made of stainless steel and costs new around £2500.The PAM 140 I want to buy is exactly the same watch but the casing is made of solid gold and costs around £11000.Different people see value in different things. For instance I neither drink or smoke, dont go on holiday much, and my motoring costs are paid for by my business(because I sell cars).

I have had an Omega SMP for a couple of years, which has been a great piece, and decided to add a Panerai to my collection having always been a fan. So I went into the Wempe store on Bond St to check one out and bought it on the spot. The difference is breathtaking.

Panerai make thier watches with heart and with soul - the materials used are fantastic and the titanium case on my PAM0177 was absolutely flawless when I bought it. The watch just feels much higher quality that the Omega - not in a snobbish, look-at-me type way (as very few people outside of watch aficianados have heard of Panerai)but in the feel of the leather strap or the finish of the dial. The only areas it falls down on are that fact that there is no date and the quality of the lume is not as good as the SMP.

If it doesn't float your boat, don't worry beacause there are plenty of watches out there that will cater to your particular taste. But if you do like them, just try one for size ;-)
