I used to have a smaller size standard Seamaster quartz. I had it for about 4 years and it really was a great watch. When I got engaged two years ago- I struck a dealer with the jeweller on a very good price for a 42mm Planet Ocean- on the back of the ring purchase. I then put the old Seamaster on e-Bay.

However, for some reason the Planet Ocean has never 'felt' right. It truly is a great watch and is serving me very well- but truth be told, I wish I had bought something else... specifically the Speedmaster (or an IWC).

If I were to try and change my Planet Ocean for a Speedmaster, what is the best way? I can do a trade-in on a new one- but would stand to lose quite a bit of money on my Planet Ocean.

Are there any places where I could find a similar age & conditioned Speedmaster for a straight swap???

Realistically, what is my PO worth?

Which movement/variant would you chaps recommend on the Speedmaster?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

The only speedmaster to buy is the speedmaster professional 'moon watch'. Either new or vintage.

Nothing else will do.

got to agree here, although the saphire back is permissible!

I very nearly made the "mistake" of getting a PO with orange bezel. Whilst I still like it as a watch I don't think it has that "for ever after" feel to it that the Speedmaster has. Best of luck!

yes That was the first 'decent' watch I ever treated myself to. Great watch, much admired and I still miss it when I walk past one in a window. You won't regret it...

Can I ask why it's the only one to have, why is it so special compared to the others?

But surely if everyone adopts this policy then it will rapidly become the only one "not" to have.

(I do have one tucked away in a drawer somewhere!)

Agreed, but:

Speedmaster Prof Moonwatch = big wrist,

Speedmaster Reduced Automatic = skinny wrist and zero need to wind.

So why?? How do these compare to something like the Rolex submariner for quality?

Totally different watches for totally different purposes. One is for measuring speeds accurately and the other to keep you alive whilst diving. Unless you intend to become a professional diver I suggest you make your choice purely on aesthetics. Both are classic watches and fall into the category of must have, along with the Heuer Monaco, Navitimer 806 ..... etc.

My opinion: Buy a Speedie as they are rarer than the Submariner. Rolex make a whole bunch of models with similar layouts - GMT Master, Submariner, Yachtmaster and the Sea Dweller, all of which are heavily "reproduced" in Oriental land. Everybody seems to be wearing a Rolex. Why follow the crowd?

Go on, you know you want to.

Yes I know it is a Reduced Speedie but it is all I could find in a hurry.

Hmmmm, that's the one I want (I've got a skinny wrist that makes the full size ones look ridiculous), I think I've also seen one with slightly different colour sub dials (?), now if only I had a grand spare!

Secondhand mint = £750 to 800 max c/w boxes, warranty and papers. Try Blowers Jewellers.

It's all down to the NASA history. It was the only watch to pass their 'space tests', the fact it got the snoopy award for apollo 13 etc. It was the 1st watch worn on the moon, stuff like that. All in all an iconic watch and one I'm definitely going to get one day! cool

And if you're a sad git like me, you get a secret thrill from the fact that the back of the watch is engraved to say that it's "Flight Certified by NASA" or words to that effect.

Yes, I know I need to get out more...

Hi everyone. I am new to this forum!

In response to the wrist-size issue, how big, exactly, is the Speedmaster Professional? I have never handled one, and I'm curious as to how it would compare in width and thickness with my Rolex Submariner. When I read the measurements, it doesn't give me a good sense. I have what I think are medium-size wrists at 18 cm (around 7 inches). Is this average? Do I have girlie wrists?

Welcome, Stratajem!

According to the link posted above,

"It is a big watch, 40 mm - comparable in size to the Submariner, but feels and looks larger - this is due to the smaller bezel width and the larger dial."

As for wrist size, my watch wrist is 19.8 cms in diameter and I would consider that pretty big. My watch has a 42mm diameter and it looks about right (in my unbiased opinion wink)

Personally i'd say bugger the wrist size issue, go down the omega dealer and deal up on a speedy pro, manual wind and you'll never look back, a timeless classic.

FIW though i'm 11 stone and have a speed pro snoopy edition and i dont think it looks too big on the wrist and i'm average build etc. As someone else has said they look a little larger than they actaually are due to the size of the face and the narrow tach'y bezel, Having said this they are nicer than other watches as they are quite slim comapred to the wrist, but yet still feel weighty and thus give a sense of being bullet proof. I wear mine all day, every day and only ever take it off to wind it or if i'm working on the race car.

Pikey.

Would suggest speaking to Blowers jewellers and visiting their website. Have just bought a Seamaster and their service and pricing were exceptional.

Good luck
