Morning all,

I've been sorely tempted by a stainless steel IWC Portuguese F.A. Jones this afternoon. I've always liked the Portugueses; I've a big wrist and need something reasonably substantial to look right.

I love the look of the watch, classic and simple, and I know it's my own opinion that counts at the end of the day.

What I wanted was your esteemed opinions as to whether the F.A. Jones was a desirable collectors' piece, superior to or as desirable as the standard watches, or is it merely a promotional device designed to lure in the less sophisticated punters like myself?

All opinions gratefully received.

What a beautiful watch. Who cares about all the other stuff, you should buy it.

Hi Mark, did you get it then ? Following earlier threads on here I ordered a catalogue from their site which arrived along with a price list yesterday, some truely beautiful watches there. My next was going to be a Breitling but now im not so sure.

Haven't taken the plunge yet.

I went in yesterday afternoon, cheque book throbbing anxiously in my pocket. While there, I also tried on a Portuguese automatic 7-day reserve (IWC Ref IW500109 here), steel with a black face. It gave me serious pause for thought...

As you can see, it's fussier and doesn't have the understated elegance of the F.A. Jones. It's also more of a casual watch and I need to wear a suit to work every day, so it's slightly less suitable for my personal purposes.

And yet, and yet... Something about it makes me want it slightly more than the F.A. Jones. I think I would prefer to like the F.A. Jones yet the vulgar, immature, Bond-loving part of me actually prefers the 7-day reserve.

My local friendly watch merchant is having a think about how much of a trade-in he'll allow me for my current watch so I have until Tuesday or Wednesday before I have to make my mind up.

At the moment, I confess I'm leaning slightly towards the 7-day Reserve...

Feel free to talk me out of it! wink

Think i prefer the 7 day piece as well (both very nice though), but i dont have to wear the watch... WHEREAS YOU DO!!! so pick the one you will enjoy the most and not the most popular choice from a bunch of enthusiasts! Good Luck.

have to say (and i know it's not for me frown ) that i prefer the look of the 1st one you were looking at.

Mark I have the Portuguese Chrono Automatic, which is very similar to the 7 day and I am delighted with it. So I would tend to go with the 7 day as well. But as the man used to say on the telly "The choice is yours!" or am I dating myself again!rolleyes

I confess to being somewhat surprised; I had incorrectly assumed I would be met with a chorus of advice, saying I should go with the F.A. Jones.

I'm glad you don't think I'm bonkers to go with the 7-day Reserve - I know it's my decision at the end of the day but only a foolish man fails to at least consider the opinion of others.

I have another couple of days to make my mind up and I think I'll drop in again tomorrow for another look-see.

I'll keep you posted on the eventual decision and thanks again for the opinions and advice. thumbup

Tough choice.

I really like them both.

I recon you'd be happy with either of them. The first one is a limited edition with a nod towards IWC history with the slightly reworked movement, it also has a perhaps slightly more classic look.

The second is more modern looking but not too fussy with the dials. I like the red reserve dial. I'm sure both will age well.

If it were me I'd probably go for the black 7 day as I think I'd run the risk of going off the blue hands and numbers on the F.A. Jones but i'd be more than happy with either. I'd just try on both one after the other and go for it.

I don't feel sorry for you as I think you're a bit of a lucky bastard. hehe

Go with the F.A Jones.

The 7 day is much thicker, which in my opinion isn't what they Portugeses are about.

I don't know about much thicker - 2.2mm in fact - but it is certainly a big watch, the biggest of the Portuguese except the frankly enormous (and expensive) Perpetual Calendar and the Tourbillon.

Personally I would have either the Automatic (7-day) or the Chrono - both in steel, but probably the in-house movement in the Auto would tip it for me (over the chrono). However you should buy the one you want and ignore what anyone else says ... smile

Well, after all the prevarication and discussion, I am the proud new owner of an Automatic 7-day Reserve, steel with black face as per the photo above.

I'm absolutely thrilled and thoroughly enjoying the little bursts of pleasure you get when you forget for a moment that there's a new watch on your wrist and look down and catch sight of it again... cloud9

The F.A. Jones is a beautiful watch but in the end I preferred the more contemporary looks of the Automatic so that's what I plumped for.

Thanks again for all the input and opinions - most appreciated!
