My son is ten years old in December. I thought I would start him off on the road to watch appreciation with some sort of automatic chrono. Clearly, a large 44 mm watch will look bloody stupid!!

Any suggestions for 36mm~ish automatic chronos?

I like the look of Oris, so will look at some of those to see if they go that small but any other suggestions would be good.

Mini version of 1st watch worn on the moon - I'd have loved that when I was a kid!! 35.5mm case.

Spotted ya!
What watch did we wear at 10? Timex?
Then really appreciate a nice Chrono 20 plus years later when purchased from one's own graft, not taken for granted.
Get him a watch which will be 'cool' in the context of his age and amongst his contemporaries. The Seiko Honda Formula 1 at about £250 looks very smart.Fancy one myself!

Superb watch. I treated myself to a reduced speedie for my birthday and have worn it every day, apart from holidays and manual work etc.

The case size is 35.5 mm, 38.5mm to the shoulder and 41mm to the watch crown which is quite small for a chronograph.

Time keeping is excellent, dial layout, unlike a navitimer, is very simple and easy to read. Very good valjoux automatic movement, good watch weight and small enough for a skinny wrist.

It is a chronograph which oozes class rather than bling.

Also, the speedie will last forever, which makes it likely that your son will be able to pass it on to his son. [Or daughter]

It is not that expensive either. About £950 new if you shop around, or considerably less as a new/secondhand item, complete with box and papers. Try Bentleys or The Swiss Watch Company.

Totally agree with your comments Andy. What a fantastic present for a son.

Hi J

Nearly rang you today - saw you in the M5 on the ring road. How did the karting enduro go last week??

Anyway, see what you mean re: kids watch - just down want to spend money on a piece of crap!

Those Tissot are lovely... Personally my son is getting a Seamaster when he reaches 18 - he covets them anyway, but hopefully by then he'll look after things a little better.... you know what boys are like!
