Festina question

I'm a lucky man, and have just been bought a Festina MOS90 (or 8977?) but I have an issue with it. At the bottom left on the case, there is a pull-out switch, that makes the bottom left dial go from 'off' to 'on'. But what is it doing?

Looks like this, but a metal strap.
