This is more of a general interest than anything else, but what would you buy as an investment timepiece?

Rolex Orange hand Explorer 2 and maybe Paul Newman daytona.

Perhaps, if we are talking current models, the new special edition speedmaster (£5k if you can find one).

Or a rolex Sub 50th ltd edition. Only 3k (to buy) list but you will not make as much as a Daytona! Finding them though may prove harder than buying them!!

There is very little money to be made if any buying a new Rolex unless you have been on a waiting list for several years for a steel Daytona

yes

Or a "red" Rolex Submariner (#1680)(with some provenance to establish that the dial hasn't been doctored) Also the early non-date Submariners seem to be doing not too badly (#5512/5513) as are the early Sea Dwellers though the Double red ones are now £££££
