I've only ever had one watch at a time and nothing particularly fancy - the most recent being a Ellese watch my dad bought for me years ago as a birthday present probably for about GBP 250.00

I had an uncle pass away last month who liked his watches and had a few nice ones. Anyway, he left me some money and a gold watch (don't know what it is yet) so I thought that a nice way to remember him was to get a nice watch that I'll use on a daily basis. I might get his initials engraved on the back as well.

So, I've loved the re-issues since they came out over ten years ago and have always wanted one. I know there may be less 'typical' watches about but this to me is a nice simple chronograph that I've wanted for a long time. It's also automatic which I like. Also, as you will see from the image, I have slender wrists and this fits perfectly. The Monaco, for instance, is to large to look that it'is meant to be there.

I know this will give me years of enjoyment and a nice reminder of my late Uncle Phil.

The Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph with a brown crocskin strap.

Cheers - me too. Maybe now that suddenly my watch collection is going to go from one to three in a very short space of time I might start to look at others and build a nice set of watches. Only problem is being in Dubai but I travel quite often and might find some nice pieces.

Nice watch, and a fitting way to remember someone who had an interest in them.

Congrats - does that have a brown face or black?

Compare and contrast this with the "Want a new watch" thread.

Some people (e.g. Asterix) get it, others don't.

Nice watch, Asterix.

Aren't watches much cheaper in Dubai making it a great place to build up a collection?

It's a black face - doesn't come in brown to the best of my knowledge although the tachy version does.

The only cost comparison I could do was against the best internet deals. I can only assume that they might be a touch less than you can get on the high street. It came out about the same as the lowest.

I don't think that Dubai is quite the bargain paradise it once was but we do have a number of great watch emporiums.

What about used watches out there?
Given the number of fakes knocking about I'd be extremely wary. Also, I can't say that I've ever seen a used watch shop. It's such an immature market here that I'd be surprised if there was much of collectors 'scene' so to speak - I'll keep my eye out though.

There is a road in the gold souk with about 8 or 10 shops specialising in used watches.Loyal workers in Dubai are sometimes rewarded by their wealthy employers with expensive watches and because not everybodys into watches they end up for sale in these kind of shops. As I love my watches I always head for these places and some do have some tasty stock. Most are overpriced and they try to play the bartering game with you(new watches ie Rolex are more expensive to buy in Dubai than the UK anyway),however it is possible to get the odd bargain. If you are looking for something with diamonds be careful as most watches on sale are fitted with diamonds aftermarket ie.the diamonds were not on the watch when assembled at the factory, and they can be inferior to factory supplied ones.I tried to buy a secondhand Panerai a couple of years ago but they would not barter down enough so the watch was still cheaper in the UK.
