ROLEX / IWC WATCH PURCHASE ADVICE
Discussion
Hi Guys
Thinking of building up my watch collection this summer. Have not bought a decent watch for a while so am planning on spending a bit if I can.
Now, obviously I want to get the most for my money so need to spend wisely. Can anyone help advice which would be the cheapest purchase location:
1. - www.watches.co.uk - nearly new, lightly used examples - generally 10% cheaper ish.
2. - Heathrow duty free - do i save the VAT this way?
3. - Dubai - planning on visiting for 4 days on route to our honey moon location.
Watch wise i am thinking about a stainless or ti all round watch. Most probably a Rolex or IWC.
Cheers in advance.
Edited to say - i will also be buying the missus a Cartier at the same time - so will that give me anymore bargining power?

Won't duty free save you the VAT so cheaper than 10% (aren't watches.co.uk prices a good bit more than 10% of U.K. rrp?) . I'm not sure how much cheaper a Rolex would be in Dubai, aren't Rolex good at international price fixing? I would EXPECT the IWC in Dubai to be the best value of the three options.
I'm very interested in the outcome of this thread as i'm having similar thoughts. Except i'm obviously not going on honeymoon with your lovely missus.

rolex's arn't my cup of tea so i didnt study the prices of them when over there.
however i have bought 7 watches on various trips to dubai for the misses and i saving huge amounts.
the gold suc is where you will find the best deals i'd be amased if rolex's wern't a lot cheaper.
also note that not all the watches will be on display ask to look in the safe.

the answer quite simply is to buy in dubai you can save thousands.
know what your looking for and steer away from watches that have been added to, and you cant lose.

I didn't think rolex were much cheaper in Dubai?
...that's correct. I bought a stainless steel datejust there a few years ago and the price, when converted back to sterling, was practically the same as the UK list price! I was NOT happy.
thanks guys.
So it depends on which model i go for really then. Must admit i have always been a IWC man, but for some reason of late i have really fancied getting a Rolex....any thoughts on the model to go for...i know its up to me at the end of the day, but i am torn ..
Other than the airport where are the best places you mention in Dubai.
Anyone else got any thoughts.....

off topic - i was in Monaco last year and was reading some local posh magazine in the hotel and it had a feature on a limited edition IWC a local jeweller happened to be selling. Is there anywhere online you know of where it lists all watches made by manufactures - ideally with pics? IWC website was not helping me last time i looked.

The IWC website runs fine for me. It has the complete range.
www.iwc.com/index-en.asp Check collection along the bottom of the page.
You'll get more off an IWC in Dubai than a Rolex.

would be interesting to see what price they are in the gold suc i would expect them to be a lot cheaper will have a look next time i go.
Did not really see any branded stuff in the gold suc when I was in Dubai. Saved a good sum off my Breitling in one of the branded shops in a mall.
Ben
Bought from a Rolex from a UK dealer and got nearly 22% off list. It was an in stock watch, but I was well pleased with that.
I`ve heard of and tried around a bit for bigger discounts, but in the end went local to me. Told them how much I would pay, and then waved the money at them. Bit of a haggle and hay presto!
Try the local route first, you might be surprised....

What was it? I haven't been able to get discount on a sports watch yet - hence why I have a friendly secondhand dealer (I'm a stingy git).I`ve heard of and tried around a bit for bigger discounts, but in the end went local to me. i am considering an IWC Pilots Watch or a Rolex Yachtmaster after christmas to add to my Omega Seamaster (james bond) - i love the classy look of the IWC - but Rolex is also a classic !
I normally buy all my jewellry from Berrys in Leeds. what discount should i be expecting on either purchase ? would a special trip to dubai be worthwhile for either ?
