Panerai always look best plain to me, so the third one, thanks.

There is/was a very nice panerai for sale on chrono24 which looks like it is from someone in the city if you are interested:
www.chrono24.com/web/en/suchen/u/index.htm?showid=1250115&SUCH_PBIS=5000&SUCH_PWAEHR=GBP&STANDORTLAND_ID=UK&MODELL=Panerai&SORTIERUNG=1&myattstring=103@104@&lastshow=0&anzahlgesamt=1
I would go with the Panerai.
The IWC is the split minute and the most 'complicated' of the 3. Its a neat feature but if you aren't going to use it you could save yourself £2.5k (IIRC) you could buy the aquatimer chronograph which looks identical ( www.blitzwatches.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productid=1439 ) (although doesn't have the split minute function). With the change buy a 2nd hand Panerai!
The IWC is much smaller than the Panerai's if that matters (ie if you have popeye arms )

It's deceptive, they're both 44mm. Having previously only seen it in pictures, when I tried the Aquatimer chrono on I was suprised how big it was compared to my PAM 0111, and the chrono is smaller than the split-minute. hutchingsp said:
How about the cheaper IWC and a plain Luminor Base or similar.. two for one..
The cheaper IWC, I assume you mean without the split minute, just looks that little bit too small for my liking - the reason for likeing the split minute one is just that its that little bit chunkier
They do it in a black and white, if the yellow is an issue for some on that one?

Do they? I know my catalogue is out of date, but they only show the split-minute in yellow on their website. I think the chrono-automatic with yellow is titanium and the one with grey/white is stainless steel, but I could be wrong.

Ah very true... I think i just assumed as they did the smaller one in yellow or black, they would do the same on the larger one

I thought the split minute was thicker rather than 'bigger'. How about an IWC Portuguese? Not as sporty but pretty timeless (in terms of looks, not functionality ) - www.blitzwatches.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productid=1518

Would need to be a metal strap - leather ones always go a bit minging!
Best thing is to try them on, pays your money and takes your choice!
Noted comments regarding size, I have a few watches, amongst them are two 44mm IWC's and a 44mm Panerai. Whilst the case diameter is comparable, the Panerai feels much larger due to apparent extra thickness and with the locking mecanism over the winder.
Hope it helps?
