The movement in the crystal back version isn't actually flight qualified - it's essentially the same movement but with some of the screws and finishes in nicer looking materials (as you can see them). You can have the crystal back put on an actual 'flight qualified' movement if that floats your boat - although the crystal back wasn't qualified either

TBH, I'd spend the money from a modern crystal back on a speedmaster from the Apollo years (or earlier) - the .321 movement is the movement which was first flight qualified (without Omega's knowledge initially) and is the movement which landed on the moon. The later .861 movement was also flight qualified (and went through more extensive testing, from memory, against more competitors - including some customs built US watches) but arguably didn't land on the moon.

My next speedy is going to be a 'pre space', non-professional version. The version which was used in the first space walk - if I can find one at the right price.

Planning on going into space soon ?

It seems the 3573 has the saphire face and the now older 3572.50.00 has the original plastic one.

I,ve got a speedy with a genuine Omega crystal back. cost a lot of money I seem to remember from a dealer in USA a few years ago and was unlucky enough to get interceprted by customs for the duty and screwed by the post office for collecting the duty . I'm a bit picky about my watches so am witing for a new bezel and hesalite crystal from same dealer and may sell it afterwards to help fund a Portugeiser

Ive got one too, but not sure which model number. Its lovely but does lose a little time sdespite having it serviced every couple of years. Maybe the seconds tick slower on the moon?

My speedy pro (3570.50.00 steel back cal.1861) has always gained a minute or so per week. Never really bothered me though, it doesn't claim to be the most accurate timepiece in the world, just one of the most reliable.

I have Speedmaster Professional (with Apollo XI stamped in the case at the 9.00 position).

Is this a special edition? - it was bought new as a present in the late 80s. Still have the box the box came in and the watch (and the boxs, patches etc are as new. It's my personal favorite.

Insurance value??

I am desperate to buy one of these now that I have the cash. Although, I am not too bothered about having a Nasa spec edition.

What kind of discount should I get off the high street price (£1,675) in the current economic climate?

I have been offered a brand new one for £1,360 by the dealers on the net, (secondhand for as low as £900 for a 2000 model). Are there any disadvantages to buying secondhand (apart from the usual scuffs and no Omega warranty etc)?

No, not if you're careful and find a good, well cared for watch from a good source. But if you can find a good deal on a new,2008,UK supplied, factory warranted piece it might be tempting to pay the extra.....

bought my snoopy edition brand new you just have to be blunt and ask what the best price is if they want to sell it cash today. I wouldnt be worried about getttign a used one but you can often get such a good eeal on a new one its seems silly spending a only a couple of hundred less on a used one. that was my view at the time anyway

Thanks guys,

I have just taken delivery of a two year old standard model and got it for £975. It is absolutely mint and the best offer I got on the web was £1,360 with RRP at £1,675.

Always thought it would be a bit of an anti climax to get it, but I think it's better than expected.

Enjoy it. I got mine back in December (pics on the wrist check thread) and love it.

In the market for one of these myself at the moment so scouring the adds for one at the moment including fleabay....

Am I better to get as late a one as possible or is there more value attached to buying one from the 70's or 80's?
