Applies to all 'high end' Swiss watches but I found this fascinating, and insightful:

Interesting. I personally wouldn’t buy a clone of any kind, because I’m not sure what my money is funding etc. But I can understand the engineering point around the very minimal difference between a clone and the true product. Sheds a different light on what a buyer is actually getting for their cash.

For me the more interesting point was that a 'Swiss' watch only has to have a percentage of its cost (60%?) expended in Switzerland for it to be called 'Swiss Made' and that the Swiss have inadvertently (some would say stupidly) exported their watch making expertise and even some tooling to the Chinese, who naturally are gobbling it up with gusto.

This allows things, such as cases and dials, to be made in China whilst still qualifying the completed watch as being Swiss Made. But is has also opened the door to the Chinese being able to make mechanical watches that are every bit as good, indistinguishable in fact for all but an expert.

It's interesting (to me) how the word 'clone' has replaced the word 'fake' in common parlance around this area.

A sales guy who works in my office wears a fake Rolex.

He thinks only God can judge him, he's wrong.

As with most fake high end products the biggest tell is the person wearing it.

Just couldn’t wear a fake full stop.

Each to their own, but to deceive to make you appear something you are not is not a good look.

He lives in Hounslow, proudly tells people he lives in “West London” like it’s Kensington.

Fakes = theft of IP

Those who patronise the cloners fund criminals. They also miss the pleasure of enjoying a genuine artisan watch. Hmm, worshipping fakery. Sad.

Support real horology.

Many watch enthusiasts will have watches that are never faked. It’s mainly mass market uncomplicated status pieces for non enthusiasts that fake factories take real time and effort over because of the mass appeal and relative ease of making a convincing fake. Several companies compete to produce the best fake Sub for that reason. Panerai are also relatively easy given their simplicity, but I confidently bought a naked PAM74 as it was never faked and had an easy to recognize El Primero movement . It’s worth knowing the fake market even as a proper watch buyer.

In today’s world, I can actually understand those who buy a good copy to wear out in that there London, whilst keeping the real one at home.

Although personally I just don’t bother wearing expensive watches in London anymore. I mean it’s all well and good handing over a copy to a stabby-type, but sometimes those stabby-types end up stabbing you regardless. And I would prefer not to end up being a column inch in the Metro/Evening Standard.

I’ve a Snoopy Timex that looks very like my black ceramic Daytona. I quite like it. It’s on a fake Oysterflex bracelet from Temu.

Aside from the irrational fear of London the trauma of being mugged is influenced not one iota by whether they steal your illegal £500 fake or your insured genuine Rolex.

I recommend that, like me, you stay at home under the duvet monitoring the feed from your Nest doorbell rather than visit London. It's a fking terrifying place, teeming with criminals, drug dealers and Jezebels. I blame Khan.

Yup. The days of being politely asked for your possessions on the street is long gone. It's a brutal battering either on the street, as getting into the car or your home and then the items are taken.

The item is irrelevant, it's just an object that you replace with another identical one. It's the battering that is relevant. You never forget that event or that 2 or 3 scumbags have changed your life forever.

hehe

I love going out and about in town, and have absolutely no intention of stopping that. But I’ll probably have my Garmin on my wrist to record the exceptionally high bpm I experience when those “jezebels” walk past. Naturally, I’ll blame Khan for that too.

I have a few fakes - but bought to try at home before buying the real thing. I haven't worn any of them other than to try out - I wouldn't wear them out of the house. smile

My Sky Dweller is moderately unusual, I don't see them out and about.
