Hello All

Be gentle with me as I have not posted in the watch forum before and it will become evident I don't know what I'm talking about!

I bought a Panerai Luminor Blu Mare 44m at the weekend but I am having to wind it up everyday as it stops working. I am conscious about overwinding it - so my very basic question is : how many times should I wind the crown?

I just hope I don't need to return it to the shop already to have it fixed under warranty - I love the watch.

Any help is greatly appreciated by you very knowledgeable folk.

Regards

Just keep winding until you start to feel some resistance. Power reserve from full is 72hrs according to Google so if you wind it every other day it shouldn’t stop.

Congrats, that's a lovely watch! It should stay ticking for 72h on a full wind. It'll be fine to wind the crown 40-50 times, most modern mechanical watch movements have a clutch to prevent overwinding too.

I have an old Panerai 176 that requires daily winding and a 372 that needs winding every 3 days. As suggested, wind until you feel a slight resistance, no further.

Just to add to the comments above - it is a manual wound watch which is why you need to wind it, as apposed to automatic winding watches which have a rotor to do it for you.

72hr power reserve, so you're not winding it enough.

Many thanks for all your responses- looks like I simply haven’t been winding it enough as it’s never got ‘tight’ when I have wound it up.

Thank you!

Nice choice, clearly a man of great taste!
As others have said, just keep winding gently until you feel the resistance. Fully wound it will last 3 days no problem.
I bought a Blue Mare in 2022, it's definitely the best looking Luminor base, the dial is a thing of beauty and it works with so many different strap combinations.
My favourite is the calf skin on a deployant clasp, it's so comfortable to wear.

Winding 30-40 times is the normal advice for a watch. Try 30 from a stopped condition and go from there.

Your watch is fitted with a clutch as it happens, so it is impossible to over wind - the clutch being a mechanism that 'slips' when it is at full tension.
