Afternoon All,

I've just turned 40 and looking to treat myself to a nice new timepiece for occasional wear. I'm a big F1 fan and i've always fancied a Tag Heure, and it just so happens the F1 'model' appears a nice choice. In particular, the latest "grey" model as shown here tickles my fancy:

Tag Heuer F1 (grey)

Other than a couple of G-Shocks and Tissot's, i've never had a "proper" watch. Is there anything I need to know? Happy to buy New or Used (ideally, 'as new' if the latter) but how do I protect myself against fakes etc. Any recommended "used" watch outlets for Tag etc.

I'm in no massive rush, so happy to take guidance on board - thanks in advance,

Matt

Hi there
Got a TAG F1 for my 40th as a present from the Mrs.
I chose it, she paid for it.
Got it from Swisswatchesdirect.

Still have it but rarely wear it now.

In fairness don't wear any watch

One word of warning. Whilst trying to reset the hour (Spring or Autumn can't remember which), I broke the winder.
Had to go back to TAG to be fixed.
Cost half the price of the watch to get it sorted.
If it hadn't been a present from the Mrs. I'd have binned it.

Nice choice, I have the same watch with the single colour strap.

I also got myself a Tag F1 as my 40th present ot myself a few years ago.

I still love the watch and will never sell it but do remember that they lose vaue massively the moment you walk out the store so make sure you get a decent discount.

Pretty difficult to lose a ‘massive’ amount on £1,500. And who cares if you buy a watch and it’s worth 50p when you walk out the shop. Not to bash your comment personally, I just don’t understand this investment watch thing...it’s all driven by the Rolex market and people who aren’t actually watch enthusiasts. If you buy a watch to mark a special moment in your life then you’d likely never sell it anyway. 99% of watches (and anything ‘new’) will lose a good percentage of their value immediately, even the very highest end brands.

Nobody goes and buys a laptop, a TV, a sofa, a mattress, jewellery etc and says “that’ll lose a lot of value the minute I walk out the shop so I’d better not buy it”.

On a side note I bought a TAG F1 in 2007 and still have it today. And it’s still my favourite watch I own. Believe it or not it was £370 new!

Its not really to do with investment purposes but many watch guys (including myself) have a habit of changing the collection around quite a bit so it is something to bear in mind if that is a possibility in the future.

As he is buying it for a milestone it may not be an issue but i dont get the comparison to a sofa, mattress or tv as most of us only have one of each of those but people often do have multiple watches at any one time.

My own F1 was bought just over 6 years ago and through a bit of good fortune managed to pick it up for 40% off RRP. I could sell it for more than i paid as the RRP has risen a fair bit since then but its a keeper so value is irrelevant.

If it's a present, buy it new and it's a great experience. I got myself an F1 Chrono for my 35th and aside from my Sekio kinetic from 2000 I wear it the most of all my watches, ironically because it is quartz and I can just put it on and go (first world problems and all).

I really like it and have it on a Gulf strap at the moment.

Yes that’s a fair point regarding changing the collection around and is not something I had considered so it’s a interesting angle thumbup.

I think that a lot of people (I’m not saying you personally) target TAG Heuer as a brand which doesn’t hold its value against retail and it has stuck, when it’s a factor which affects brands across the board. And I’ve noticed that there is a bit of TAG snobbery out there.

I think that the OP could get a nice discount on RRP even in a high street retail setting which would be my tactic. My father in law got £1,000 off a non-sale Grand Seiko recently at a major chain simply by showing interest and very light negotiation. I was with him and discounts were being offered left right and centre. Not something you’d expect as a ‘regular’ shopper in the (sometimes) intimidating setting of a upmarket jewellers but worth trying.

I do see people taking pops at tag in some of the watch groups I'm in on facebook so yes the snobbery is definitely real.

I also imagine if you paid RRP for a £1500 Seiko the resale price would probably be the same after 12 months as a similar priced tag.

Yes I could have gotten a better spec watch from a microbrand like Zelos or even Christopher ward but I didn't grow up watching the formula 1 sponsored by Zelos, it was the formula 1 sponsored by Tag and so only a Tag would do for me!

For me I just think this one looks pure class and has a cache that none of the micros will ever reach.

Totally agree about the motor racing history, same for me. I have a white dial version too and wear it on the bracelet, a leather strap and a rubber strap and it looks great (to my eyes) on all three.

My first proper watch was a TAG F1.

Still have it, but it’s a slippery slope from there!

That one is nice. Would recommend seeing if there is an outlet village near you - should get a good discount, maybe make a nice weekend of it?

Or a trusted grey dealer could save you some cash as well.
