Yes - have bought watches at auction...
- you have zero rights of redress, even if you buy by bidding online, auction companies are excluded from the standard distant selling returns legislation as by holding a preview they are deemed to have given you the option to view the item...
- you may get some provenance by talking to the auction company as they will often know the consignee, but beyond that you are unlikely to get much of a condition report or reassurance that the watch is working beyond - is ticking!
- don't forget commission charges / fees - often now in the 30% region...
if you know what you are doing, the there can be a considerable reduction on ebay prices so you can get some good bargains - but equally it is possible to en d up having wasted your money if you are not so good at spotting issues...
For me - no hesitation in buying vintage watches because they are generally quite simple and less likely to be fakes - but I am not sure I would buy a more modern premium brand that way... so I bought a vintage Omega at auction a week or so ago - but wouldn't buy a modern omega...

We saw the other side of auctions.
We had my wife's Mont Blanc stolen as part of a car theft when out R8 was taken. It was a 10 year wedding anniversary present and she'd not even seen it yet. R8 story here:

I kept a search open on ebay with the model and didn't find it. One night I was just searching for "Mont Blanc watch" for me and saw an identical model to the one that got stolen, described as "Mont Blanc Ladies watch" so they didn't even know the model. This model was never sold in Britain so worth a second look. And what do you know, they'd photographed the back nicely enough that the serial number was showing and it's ours.
eBay was useless and the police were eventually fantastic, bringing the watch back. Eventually we got the story of its journey.
The couple selling it on eBay had bought it at a specialist jewellery auction but the police wouldn't tell me which one. They had no idea it was stolen and they had the watch taken by the police with no compensation, so I really feel for them.
It had been put up on the specialist jewellery auction by a well-known fence who'd been in and out of jail his entire life and was now in his 80s. Despite registering the watch serial number at the world's latest stolen jewellery register as suggested by Mont Blanc, Enquirus, the auction house had done no checks at all.
The fence was charged and the officer was very confident he'd see jail again. He refused to give up who he bought the watch from, as he'd apparently done his entire life.
Returned watch and the replacement I'd bought at super late notice (from eBay!). She doesn't wear them like this most of the time.

I am not intimately familiar with the market prices of all the pieces, but the estimate for the Rolex DD looks punchy for a clearly shagged-out and non-running example.Came across these watches earlier and thought some members may be interested .
