Tag Heuer Monaco Variants
Discussion
Finally got round to resuming my search for a Monaco. Sadly I’m on a fairly short budget so I’m firmly in preowned territory.
What are the smaller versions (model number with a W prefix)? I don’t really like the look of them but they’re notably cheaper. Do they use different movements?
Going back to the normal ones, what is the difference between a regular auto and a ‘Calibre’ movement? Are they worth the extra money?
Also, any recommended sources please? Looked at Ramsdens, WoS, Parker’s so far. Should I be looking on Chrono24 too? I’m still nervous about it though.
Any input appreciated, thanks.

That is lovely! Top end of my budget but very nice. I’d rather have a leather strap though but beggars can’t be choosers. I’m waiting for some money to come in so hopefully it hangs around for a couple of weeks!MrBig said:

This might sound rather weird but IMO you’re better off with an earlier version as it looks much better with the original Techniques d’Avant-Garde logo with the arrow shaped ‘G’. The latest logo just looks wrong and I could never buy a newer one with it. I think the change took place around 2015. What are the smaller versions (model number with a W prefix)? There are so many versions, it is worth doing a little digging. Here is a useful link to get your started. A brief history of the Tag Heuer Monaco
For most people, I think it comes down to which calibre and dial you prefer.
The original calibre 11 has the crown on the left and the pushers on the right. These include the model popularised by Steve McQueen. Versions of these are still manufactured, often branded Heuer.
The newer designs and calibres have the crown and pushers on the same side. These have Tag Heuer branding.
The dial designs seem to be mostly different across the two lines.
I think above is more or less accurate. I know that depending on the year of manufacture some calibre 11 have Tag Heuer on the dial so there are definitely exceptions. Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.
