Hi all...

Looking for a new purchase but something I'm never quite sure on, is whether I buy a cheaper watch to start a collection, or upgrade to something a bit better/more special?

I have a vintage Omega my grandpa left me, a TAG I bought 10 years ago, and a Breitling bought only recently, but I'll probably be moving that on as I'm just not really gelling with it.

The Omega will of course never be going. My budget would be around the £2,500 mark, but if I sold the TAG I could push that up to about £3,000. The arguments for and against each option is that to keep one watch, I never go out! I use an Apple Watch for daily duties and that won't be going anywhere, so I keep a special watch for when I have evenings out etc. but with my life at the moment, I have 3 small children and babysitting is hard to come by. In 10 years of owning my TAG I've probably only worn it 30-40 times. So I feel if I started a collection, as such, it would be for the purpose of collecting as multiple watches would very rarely get worn (of course, that will hopefully increase as the kids get older). On the other flip of the coin, having 3 kids, it would be nice to have 3 watches to eventually hand down one each or something when I pop me clogs, but then is it silly to collect for that reason, when I'm perfectly happy with the one?

Anyway, if I was looking to add, I could get something a bit different (my TAG is a silver/silver Aquaracer)

Whereas if I was to sell the TAG then I don't mind sticking with a bracelet for a single watch...

For ReAsOnS I'm not really interested in the secondhand market. I always felt like I was chasing the brands, first getting TAG then on to Breitling/Omega and eventually hopefully Rolex. However, I'm starting to pull away from that now. I just want to get what the hell I like smile

I did actually try the Carrera on and liked it very much, along with the carbon and titanium Solargraph models whilst I was in the boutique, although those didn't impress as much in the flesh. I know it all changes once you've tried something on, but options appreciated!

This is a new one; someone comes in looking for buying advice for a watch they’re unlikely to wear.

Anyway, those all look lovely choices, go with the one that’ll bring you the most joy.

Best of luck!

There is an ORIS BIG CROWN on C24 - Brand New.

cost <£1,000

If you like that model, and want to save £600, just buy that.

I don’t get why you’re talking about starting a collection when you don’t seem to wear the watches you have. Anyway, I’m never a fan of keeping things you don’t wear. Much better to sell them and use the money toward something you’ll use. I’d therefore shift the TAG and Breitling and start to look at the likes of Tudor or Grand Seiko. You can get something special and it would be a nice piece to start a collection.

Me and my sister inheritied one of our dads Rolex each, they both have huge sentimental value because dad wore them and enjoyed them.

If dad hadn't of worn them, wed probably of flipped them for cash by now, your kids probably wont be interested in some watches you hand down if you dont wear them yourself.

I would say its pointless getting rid of the tag simply due to the amount you would get for it.

All interesting points, thanks.

There's still two sides to it though!

As Dolf Stoppard says... why bother having more than one watch, when I bearly get to wear the (main) one I have now? I think at this point in life, having just the one does make sense.

Then again, as blue_haddock says... why bother selling the TAG when realistically it's only going to bump the budget up by £500 or so, which is nothing really. Plus, it does have some sentimental value I guess, as it's something I yearned to own for a long time, and I wore it to my wedding etc.

Also good point by the-norseman that my kids might not care about watches at all! However, having my grandads does mean something to me, although I'd never wear that either (gold, and far too small) I would like to get it restored one day though. It's a keepsake isn't it.

As said, I will try all on (and the Oris ProPilot X which has caught my eye too) and hopefully I'll know. I can get 20% off on the Hamilton/Oris/Tissot watches making the cheap even cheaper, which would possibly leave me able to buy another watch after a while whistle I know this is a very personal issue to think about, but I kind of want to go into it having thought of every direction I could go.

OP - sell the Breitling and keep the Tag.

Put the money you get for the Breitling into a savings account and sit on the whole idea of buying another watch until you’re certain that’s what you want.

Watches are functional jewellery and so, while nice to have a collection, actually one is plenty. And if that’s your Apple Watch for days to day and your granddad’s watch and your Tag for occasions, then that’s fine too.

Don’t get sucked into consumerism for the sake of it..!

You speak a lot of sense... however, I am eager to get something new! Been thinking about it for months now, maybe over a year. Just need a visit to an AD to see if any of the watches above speak to me. That was the problem with the Navitimer, fantastic on paper, but just not doing it for me so much in the flesh, as it were.

Hopefully can update before the year's out with a purchase cool

Nice to have a conclusion to threads... so after thinking about what I really wanted from a watch, I made a choice. I've enjoyed wearing my TAG for the last 10 years but now want to experience something else as my No.1 watch. I happened to be in London recently so popped into Longines boutique to try on a few watches. Fell in love with the black dial Legend Diver.

Sold the Breitling on eBay just as they scraped seller fees which was handy.

Pretty much instantly purchased the Legend Diver. Only thing was I couldn't find a discount on the black dial/bracelet anywhere. However, I found it on leather at 22% off so bought that and am currently in the process of getting the bracelet directly from Longines. So a great deal, and an extra strap for spare.

Not sure whether I'll keep the TAG or not. I don't need two watches that are black dial/bracelet so might see if I can get an official rubber strap for something different, and more casual. I did contact them about this but they said they couldn't help and I'd have to visit the TAG boutique to enquire. So I'll leave that one on the back burner for now.

If you wore your TAG at your wedding and your Grandad's watch means something to you, then I'd say keep the TAG to pass down. I'm sure in decades to come your Grandkids would quite like 'the watch Grandad wore to his wedding' as a sentimental keepsake.
