Howdy Folks,

Full disclosure, I know nothing about watches. Apart from telling the time I use mine (Garmin) to measure how unhealthy I am. However, we had a new Porka on order and arriving in a few months. The dealer is asking if we want the "matching" (our specification) watch:

Porsche Design Chronograph Exclusive Series for GT2RS

Case: titanium (sandblasted) – 42mm x 15mm – sapphire crystal with sevenfold anti-glare on both sides – darkened sapphire pane in case back – screw down crown – 5 bar water resistant

Movement: Porsche Design caliber Werk 01.200 – 28,800 vph (4Hz) – 25 jewels – 48 hours of power reserve – Etachron regulator system – Glucydor balance – Incabloc shock protection – Nivaflex mainspring – C.O.S.C. chronometer certified

Strap: Comes with two leather / alcantara straps with titanium folding buckle

Now, we can have all of this for the low low price of £8500... Crazy right? For that sort of money I would expect the glass face to made of condensed tears of ginger haired orphans, and sporting a perpetual mechanism fashioned from a fallen meteorite, all encased in unobtanium.

Or maybe I am wrong, and it's a potentially good (albeit speculative) long-term investment. Is there a historic market for these sort of watches? I did a quick Google and found very little info.

I doubt the watch is a good investment, but the GT2RS will be worth double what you paid for it as soon as you drive it off the forecourt, so who cares about making a profit on a watch?!

Enjoy the RS, you lucky bugger!

Porsche Design watches have not been particularly well regarded for some years now.

The last really good ones were the Orfina 7177's from the late 70's / early 80's.

The watch doesn't look that great to me either

but if you can afford a GT2RS, and you do like it, why not?

It all confirms what I thought, it smacks of ongoing Porsche accessory opportunism.

Re: Andy's point about "if you like it" - I don't love it. If it is was £850, I'd have one. At least with the car itself, I know the design, engineering, materials, and availability - more or less justify the price.

Ta!

Walk away, there are better watches (chronograph, higher end complications, or plain three-hander) for similar prices or much less.
Even with a matching 1000 pieces produced (presumably), like every other Porsche Design watch made over the decades by IWC and Eterna, before PD built their own facility and sold Eterna, the residual value will plummet.
