Hi all,

Having enjoyed numerous threads on here of people spending other peoples money, I am after some opinions/advice on a 2nd watch purchase to see if there's any suggestions on anything I have missed as an option smile

I am looking for a second watch to add to my current daily which is a GMT Master. I have previously owned a PAM 312, a Royal Oak 15300, a BLNR and a bi metal Daytona (oops) at various stages, always just 1 or 2 at a time.

I got my GMT Master last year and have grown really fond of it (it now has sentimental value having worn it for my wedding day), so I want to buy something else but to keep this too and wear in rotation. Criteria really is as follows;

- ideally not on a stainless bracelet as the GMT Master does that, so leather or rubber strap
- suitable to be worn during the week with either a suit or business casual, but also on the weekend with t-shirt and jeans. So not a dress watch
- equally I'd like it to feel special enough that it's a no brainer that I am choosing it if going out in the evening
- nothing yellow gold, I am sure a time will come when I like YG but it isn't for me for now
- needs to suit someone in their early 30's but ideally be timeless, I'd like to grow out a collection over time
- I am a big sucker for Rolex and AP but not entirely closed to exploring new options

Currently my options as far as I have looked;

Rose Gold Yachtmaster on the oyster flex - beautiful watch and just about in budget
Rose Gold Daytona on leather/oyster flex - love the chocolate dial, bit dressier than the YM
AP Royal Oak Offshore - love these but budget only really stretches to a 42mm and I think I'd prefer the ceramic bezel of a 44mm as it'll no doubt be a scratch magnet
Patek Aquanaut - bit of a dark horse this, it's a Patek!!

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Thanks!

Some kind of Panerai would meet most of your criteria.

While you’re there, look at the following others:

Glashutte Original Seventies
Bvlgari Octo (inc. Gerald Genta branded Octos)
Franck Muller Vanguard – no more of an oddball choice than trying to pair a ROO with a suit or being a no-brainer for a night out – possibly the more subtle Ti/RG version rather than the blue Yachting one
Girard Perregaux Laureato – buy on strap or buy it separately (and deployant clasp) to have the option of either. You might also consider the Vintage 1945 XXL (with big date & moonphase)
Piaget Polo S or Polo 45, and there’s a nice WG/Ceramic Polo too – https://www.chrono24.co.uk/piaget/piaget-polo-date...
Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Metrographe – like the GP Laureato, buy on bracelet and add strap/clasp for swapping option.

Maybe an FP Journe Octa Sport? https://www.chrono24.co.uk/fpjourne/octa-sport--id...
Or a De Bethune? https://www.chrono24.co.uk/debethune/db22--id68254...

Have fun… yes

Was going to suggest the rose gold Yachtmaster on the rubber bracelet, but I see it’s already on your list! Would be a no brainer for me - it looks stunning.

Some interesting options and suggestions here, thanks chaps.

I do like the ROO but agree it is challenging to pull it off with a suit;

The Parmigiani is a really good looking watch, I hadn't heard of this model so thank you. Very nice. Going to do a bit more research on this one.

I think the Yachtmaster or Daytona still top the list, but I am going to enjoy the next few weeks exploring all options before pulling the trigger......

Lovely. Really like them and it's a consideration. I have tried one on but a couple of years ago, would definitely want to try one again. Main issue is availability, they are going for so far over list on the pre owned market! Is this image your own? How do you find the watch, any issues to be aware of at all? And is the bezel a scratch magnet?

Yes it's mine - I don't think it's a scratch magnet... it's not bulky. Same movement as the Nautilus - which is the hot watch and massively overpriced.

I would normally say Rolex but there is a Blancpain 50 Fathoms in Rose gold for sale on TZ at the moment and its keeping me awake at night because I cant justify it. Have a look at one of them

Given the criteria NDA has nailed it.

How about an affordable tourbillon? A large watch at 45mm, the Carrera 02T in rose gold.
Model No CAR5A5Y.FC6377 either with the rose gold or black bezel.

How about the Patek Philippe 5522A?

It's a limited edition of 600 that's been made for the US market, and sells for $21,547 (about £16,400). I don't know if it would still be available.

I suspect that it'll work in a dress context, as well as day-to-day. It's a Patek, so ticks that box, and will hold its value.

The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 with meteorite dial is about £15,000, but is much more leftfield than the Patek. It won't hold value as well, unfortunately.

Someone has already mentioned Glashutte Original, but I'd recommend something from their 'Pano' range of watches. I personally would love a PanoInverse XL in the next few years, but in terms of remaining timeless, it might not be quite what you want. As such, how about a PanoMaticLunar with blue dial? I believe the price is around £8600 retail, so well within budget!

This is the PanoInverse XL:

Otherwise, I really like the RG Yachtmaster too!

You and me both, I'm hoping it sells soon before I get more tempted.

Some nice suggestions here, thanks chaps.

Really do like the Aquanaut, availability looks to be an issue though. Spoke to one AD who told me I can go and see them for them to assess if I am suitable to be added to the waiting list laugh I hate the way some of these brands try to make you feel as if you are fortunate to be allowed to make a purchase. Looking at a year wait potentially to get on at list, which I don't really fancy, and paying over list isn't attractive either.

As it happens I am on a list for a Nautilus 5711 (white dial) elsewhere but have kind of given up hope of it ever landing, but we shall see.....

The Glashutte Originals are very nice looking watches actually, impressive. But not quite for me......yet anyway, maybe something I explore again in future!

I think this may have been one of those threads where my mind was probably 99% made up before I made it and the replies have kind of helped reinforce it. It's a straight shoot out between the Daytona and the Yachtmaster! Seeing both on Saturday which ought to really help, as it's been 2 years since I tried on the chocolate dial/RG daytona and 18 months since I tried on the Yachtmaster. The place I am heading to look at them has a Skydweller too (RG on leather) but it's a big jump up in price. Man maths at the ready rolleyes

Seriously?? How utterly ridiculous. It's only a watch...

Enjoying mine though

Haha yes, those exact words!

Mate, it looks lovely. And goes with absolutely anything too - suit as you've shown, shorts and t shirt, around the pool etc. Really, really nice. I looked at them when you could quite easily get one for about £12k as little as 2-3 years ago, the price point has shot up since!

I may have a hunt around a couple of other AD's and put my name down for one so if I do get a call in a year I can see where I am up to and if I want to add it/sell something else and buy it.

Is it an only watch, or do you wear it in a rotation?
