Dear PH,

I need your help.

My fiancées parents are set on buying me a watch in return for their daughter but I have quite literally no idea what to ask for.

I've tried to suggest a motorbike as an alternative but that's a no go.

For between £3000-5000 what would people recommend? I have literally no idea. I've seen a few people with Breitling/Rolexes that look alright.

Any useful suggestions would really help

If you're going to sell it when they're not looking, get a Rolex. Otherwise get out to a few jewellers and pick the one YOU like best. Then wear it, love it and worry not about its' value.

The traditional answer would be a Rolex submariner for around the £5k mark, probably used.

Upsides are it's a classic looking diver's watch, has been around forever and will likely continue to be made forever (and so won't really date) and everyone knows what a Rolex is, if that matters to you. Purchased used it's likely to retain its value over time too, so you can always sell it if you want to later on.

Downsides? It's a Rolex - bit of a cliche. Plus, some people will assume it's a fake - this might work for you if you want to down-play it.

Full disclosure: I have a Rolex sub, and love it. smile

Blimey. Can I marry her instead? biggrin

Tag Heuer do some lovely motorsport themed stuff in that price bracket, look at the Autavia (Jochen Rindt connection if that's your thing) or the Carrera range. I seriously want a Carrera Calibre or an Autavia!

You could also ask in the watch sub-forum:

Thanks all. I'll look at Rolex and Tag. That was the kind of thing I was thinking about but I'm so wet behind the ears with this stuff I needed some help

You're in the middle of a magic trick. You're being made to look at the shiny, shiny tricket they are holding up in one hand while they are swerving paying for their daughter's wedding with the other? wink

You can't go wrong with a Rolex. The Submariners are highly recommended and will retain their value, but have a look at the Explorer 2 (42mm) too - black or white face; the latter is what Prince Charles gave Harry for his birthday. Also consider IWC - Pilot or Aquatimer for casual.

Steer clear of Tag Heuer - popular, but it's not in the same league as the above brands.

Wonderful and iconic a Submariner is, perhaps the Rolex oyster perpetual 39mm might be a better choice? Brand new for just over £4,000.

It is subtle, elegant and discreet, and possibly a little more versatile than a Sub. I would imagine you would want to wear the watch on your wedding day, and I don't think dive watches really go with suits/formal wear.

The problem here is that you’re asking us to persuade you to accept something you’re not really in to.
Personally, I’d sit down with them or whichever one you have a bit more of a rapport with, and explain that as much as you’re very grateful for the thought and offer, it’s just not for you.
There would be major uproar if they later found out you’d sold it to fund a bike purchase – so to save that potential scenario, ask if they’d simply give you the money and let you decide what to buy with it, and to build fond memories from.
Maybe the money would be better off put to use towards a house or repairs/upgrade.

It’d be easy for me to outline a number of brands you’ll have never even heard of, and which would be a step up from the mass produced Rolex/Omega/Breitling/TAG Heuer ones, but until you actually have an interest in watches, it’d be a waste of time and effort, and probably fall on deaf ears.

Go and have that sit-down with the future in-laws, and discuss it like rational adults.
If they won’t budge, then politely tell them thanks but no thanks.

Shouldn't you be giving them something in return for their daughter?

For 5g's I'd look at either Omega or Nomos or Tudor.
