I've put my Breitling up for sale as it never gets used anymore.
I've put it up for £2895 or best offer as I've got a decent offer from Watchfinder, but they are selling them on for £3,495.

Since I've put it on I've had a trade seller on eBay that I won't name, who has his own watch business going back and too with offers, put PayPal and postage as a condition.
The seller has 38 prestige watches for sale and feedback in the 000s.

I'm really not comfortable with this, I've heard a lot about the kind of scams that go on and my stipulation was collection only, that way it leaves both parties leaving satisfied.

What would your thoughts be, The offer is good, but the seller wants postage? Would you go for it?
If so what protection would you give yourself?

For that much money only direct bank transfer or cash would work for me.
If he wont/can't collect and pay why not visit him if you really want to shift it?

I wouldn't go anywhere near PayPal for that amount.

I'm really not sure, I'm inclined to agree but his feedback, items for sale is making me wonder.

By the way, not sure if this is in the right section Mods? Watch related but scam advice!

Looks like they have a shop in Harlow, if you don't trust a remote deal.

Offer address and postage address down as Leicester, guess that says enough!

I'd ring the shop and check.

Sell it to Watchfinder if the offer suits you. Dealing with them is quite painless in my experience.

Member since: 23-Oct-04 in United Kingdom. So 13 years and 4300 feedback. Not that unusual. Also 40 watches isn't that low. It's not like he's selling white goods on drop shipping basis listing everything that his suppliers have in their catalogue.

That's the flip side of the argument. Would you do it?
In terms of precautions there's the obvious take snaps of serial no, distinguishing features, post insured and recorded etc.
It's just the risk of a switch and report / return I've heard of many a time

Obviously if you want 100% guarantee then you have to pay premium and that means accepting a lower offer from places like Watchfinder. I sold a watch to them last year and it was relatively painless - you don't get your money straight away though.

An eBay account with feedback in the '000s is as easily hacked as the next one with 1 feedback

The main risk is the PayPal payment you receive is flagged as fraudulent. You've posted the watch - why wouldnt you, the money is in your account - the "buyer" has received it and bang, a PayPal claim is lodged, leaving you minus a watch and minus the money

At that kind of level, for me, BACS or cash on collection are the safest ways about it

You have the same level of tinfoil hat thinking as me in regards to eBay.
I declined the sellers offer with an offer to meet them either at their premises, or somewhere public and they have gone quiet so i'm happy to assume some kind of scam.

I've seen far too many stories of similar. It's a minefield.

If the buyer has gone quiet then it's safe to assume that all is not legit

What's the difference between Watchfinder's offer and his? Plenty of jewellers will give you a price and buy in person as well, no point in doing a deal at arms length that could go wrong for the sake of a few £.

It's between 2-400 squid. So worth having, however I think it's case closer on account of him going cold at the prospect of a meeting!

Yeah doesn't look great does it, I'd go for a couple more offers from jewellers to bench mark against the WF quote, I think the other offer is probably too good to be true.

I've sold through paypal 6 times for amounts over £2k and had no problems. (other than with their scandalous charges! biggrin) Obviously have made sure that buyers are genuine, have a long history and 100% positive feedback. By the time you've exchanged a few messages you can get a feel for the type of person they are and whether you may have any trouble. From the sound of it, if he is 'in the business' and is offering more than watchfinder then he must be pretty confident he has buyers for your watch. I would go for it if i were you.

Having said that, if you want an easy, stress free sale then Watchfinder offer decent purchase prices and an easy sale process. Try Blowers jewellers also. They are a bit more picky about what they buy but their purchase offers are always more than WF.

Thanks for the comment!

To put this to bed I sold the watch on Sunday to a nice chap who travelled up from Somerset, had a quick look made sure all was kosher and transferred me the cash there and then.

Couldn't have asked for a more painless transaction in the end.
