HI All,

I was extremely luck to have been presented with a brand new Stainless Steel Black Faced Rolex Oyster over the weekend.

The gift giver suggested i might like to get it engraved, but he didn't want to do that as it might destroy the value of the watch in the future (he's a very practical sort of chap). It has been left up to me as to whether to engrave it or no!!

Will a simple engraving on the rear of the case effect the later value (do Oysters hold their value?)? i'm not fussed if it halves the cost as it has far more sentimental value now, but i wouldn't want to lose 90% of the value!

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone to do the job- it would need to look perfect!

I'm no expert, but would guess that it would personalise it to you alone. But should you want to sell it in the future, just replace the back to get rid of the engraving???

I would suggest buying a spare but genuine case back and engraving that, then the original can go in the box with the spare links for swapping over should you ever want to sell it.

I plan on doing the same at a later date for my sons BLNR.

Will Rolex sell you a case back?

The generally only replace old parts for new ones, keeping the old.

Good question, I honestly don't know, however I'm sure there are ways to get them if not direct from rolex then by other means...

Incidentally I ended up going down a bit of a rabbit hole with regards to engraving watches, if you want to see some truly spectacular art then have look at this link...

The answer is that engraving does devalue a watch on the second hand market. There are ways around, like getting a replacement back and getting the engraving removed. But plain and simple an engraved watch will fetch roughly 20% less than a non engraved watch.

I engrave watch backs , interestingly Rolex are one of the easiest as they have no markings on the back, some we get in are covered in manufacturers information and finding a sensible place is the hard bit, occasionally we get requests to have the side of the case engraved but usually it's the back.
I think the de-valuation is difficult to gauge, I would be surprised at 20% on a Rolex as that's a lot of money , I would imagine as time goes on it would have less of a effect
We use lasers for the engraving www.lasermarked.com
We are in Hertfordshire and can either do the engraving via courier or in front of you!
I recommend the second but most people post in.

How famous are you?

Marilyn Monroe gave an engraved (back) Rolex to President JFK. I think that sold for much more than a similar watch without the history.

Matjk is correct whilst a £300 Omega may lose more than 20% a £2K Rolex is probably going to lose less.

I cant see how it would lose any more than the value of a new replacement case back, unless it is engraved elsewhere.

Am I correct in saying that the back to a Rolex is tailor made for that specific watch, so that it lines up correctly with the case, and that if the back is scrap then so is the entire case?

I have this on good authority from a firm which engraves Rolex backs and whose clients sign a liability disclaimer that if the firm damage the back the client accepts the watch is scrap.

Seems odd to me. I assumed any Rolex back would fit any case (for the same model/year), and that a replacement back could be bought for the same reason. Are they THAT hand made!?

Nope totally not true , we did a batch of Rolex deep seas for a oil company (nice gifts) they where supplied with spare backs that the Rolex OD supplied , what can happen is if we engraved the back it is possible that if it where put on a different watch the alignment might not be quite the same . But that's only because we have marked the back, Rolex have no markings! And most matches that do have screw on backs the markings don't line up with the watch ! Not good for OCD people, like face screws that don't line up

When they make around a million watches a year that must be a lot of hands....
