Just something that popped into my head and I wondered what the consensus was between you lot.

Its always nice to have options, however, I'm talking about how often do you feel it necessary to swap watches?

Currently I have an IWC Portofino on a black alligator strap that I wear to work but take off when I get home, I also have an Omega Seamaster that sort of triggered this post, I've been wearing it for the last week and as it has a metal strap and it has plenty of scratches I don't really feel the need to take it off at home/for showers etc. On a weekend I'll only change it if I'm going to do sports, working on the car etc. So really I only bother with the IWC if I fancy it, the Omega spends 80% of its week on my wrist and for the rest of the time, one of several G-shocks fits the rest of my needs.

So I guess you could say I have a minimum watch number of 2.

On the flip side, being married and buying more watches requires ever more inventive reasoning to avoid being put in the dog house, to that end I think I'm able to justify different watches for the following reasons...

Cheap but reliable holiday watch (doesn't draw attention and doesn't matter if it gets stolen)
Work watch (has to look fitting with a suit)
Casual watch (but not too chunky)
Special Occasion watch (wedding/anniversary gift)
Sports watch (comfortable, reliable, resilient)
Scuba Diving watch (depth timer etc)
Desert Driving watch (compass etc)

Frivolous watch number of 7.

I have more watches than I can justify but they're mostly sub 300 pounds trinkets I've bought when the Mrs isn't looking!

Feel free to list your minimum/frivolous watch number below, (I'm always on the look out for new reasons to justify another watch).

There are loads of other 'categories' you can add in:

  • Chronograph
  • Manual wind
  • Vintage
  • Heirloom / family hand-me-down
  • Digital
Maybe have a couple based on their case - ceramic, gold, titanium etc

Hmm maybe I didn't express what I meant clearly enough, I wasn't saying types of watch, I was more referring to reasons you need a watch of a certain type to justify owning it.

Ha - they are reasons. You 'need' a chronograph. You 'need' a vintage watch etc...

A G shock spends most of its time on my wrist. Before that it was a F91W but the wife hates it so bought me the G shock insisting I wear it while I train dolphins and work on vehicles.

I had a bonus a few years ago and bought a Bremont SuperMarine military special edition (1 of 350) which I only wear occasionally due to not wanting to mark it. I scratched one of the lugs changing the bracelet and the clasp has marked the rear case when I've taken it off which I'm pissed about. Occasionally think about selling it for an Omega or a black bay and pocketing the change but not sure how much it's now worth or may be in the future.

Currently fancy a Seiko SRP779 but am in talks with a local jewellers about a PADI edition. This would be my after work/weekend watch. I recently sold a load of old clutter from when I was single and raised about £200. I'd rather it went on something I wanted as opposed to getting lost in the "rainy day" fund.

I dont wear a suit often but lusting after a SARB033 and waiting to see what happens in the xmas internet sales.

TBH I only need my Riseman. Everything else is frivolous. So, "1". Please don't ask how many I actually have.

I used to rotate between several quite ordinary watches - an old Seiko 7T32 'Panda', a Skagen titanium, a fake TAG of some sort, a lovely (but small) birth-year gold Smiths, my Dad's old Sekonda, and a tatty old Casio F91W.

I still have all of the above, but haven't worn any of them since I bought a Submariner - it's on my wrist 24/7

It ticks all but the first and last of the OP's original requirements. Can't imagine wearing another watch, unless I find myself in the position of affording the latest Yachmaster....

So, in answer to the OP's question - 1/1

I only wanted one, and ended up with 2 inside a week. However there are very few watches that I like, I think it would take spending an amount I can't justify on a Patek Philippe Nautilus for me to buy another watch.

Mmmmm...

Well I NEED one for diving and I need one for day to day wear, but they COULD be the same watch, so surely the answer is always 1?

Needless to say I have more than one. wink

I 'need' one for best
I 'need' a chrono
I 'need' a grail
I 'need' a watch on a bracelet
I 'need' a watch on leather
I 'need' a ana-digi watch.

I've never felt the need for a G-Shock though! biggrin

So, that's 7, isn't it? Of course, I could buy a smart ana-digi on a bracelet and swap it out to leather when the urge took me, so we'd be back down to 2 again...
