Any recommendations for new or used mechanical watch. I know some of you guys spend multi thousands on watches but my budget is a more modest budget of up to 1k.
Thanks.

What kind of watch do you fancy, sports watch or dress watch?
What size would you prefer?
Would you consider 2nd hand?
Why does it have to be mechanical, can get some well made good looking watches which are quartz which has the huge benefit of less required in general to keep them going.

If it does have to be new and it does have to be mechanical i would start looking at Longines as they do a selection of well made mechanical watches at that price point. Further affield dependant if you want a brand people have heard of or a quality watch you could look into Stowa.

My suggestion would be answer a few of the questions above, post pictures of the type of watch you like without worrying about budget and we can throw some ideas forward.

Yes, choose something you like and buy wisely.
If you want a more precise answer, we'll need to know what style you like. Dress/ diver / modern/ vintage / stop watch / leather/ bracelet /small/ large / wallclock etc etc?

A used watch at that money will net you a nice piece. Depends on whether you like dress or sports. Some watches will cover most bases and most people won't have a clue what you're wearing anyway.

Thanks for reply.
Dress watch, second hand is preferable, I dislike the current fashion for oversize watches. As for mechanical, it's just a nostalgic thing tbh. Just a discreet reasonable quality time piece.
I currently wear a Raymond Weil it's 26 years old now but being quartz still working. Just fancy a change and treat myself at reaching 65 years young.
I will certainly have a look at the Longines.

Either tbh, although if it's automatic that at least means I won't over wind it.

Vintage omega seamaster de ville? Tissot visodate, seiko cocktail time, several Hamiltons in that price range. Loads of choice!

If you are after smallish dress watch have a look for IWC 2nd hand. If you can live with 34mm

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IWC-International-Watch-...

Or a bit of JLC action

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaeger-Le-Coultre-18k-go...

These are just random from 5 mins on eBay, but they look decent and represent a lot of quality for less than a grand.

Just a few thoughts,

http://www.hackettwatches.com/hw/items/JWEBA95CYY

http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Oris/Classic/733%2075...

http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Raymond%20Weil/Maestr...

http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Tudor/Prince%20Date/7...

https://www.stowa.de/shop/ Pretty much anything from here is good value.

http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Bell%20and%20Ross/Vin... Budget creep.

Just a few suggestions unsure about whether they are all good value for money, but i own all of the brands ive posted and am happy with the quality and have bought from all of the places with the exception of hackett watches but everyone here speaks very highly of them. I would also suggest that with watchfinder normally a deal can be done so dont be too put off by the bell and ross it would be a lovely watch.

Im sure others will be along but i would also recommend watches.co.uk but couldnt see anything on there i thought you would like.

Hope some of this helps and please dont forget to post what you end up with.

Don't worry about over-winding because, unless you're considering strapping a 19th C key-wound pocket watch to your wrist it's a myth.

You simply can't "over-wind" a watch except in popular folklore and the excuses of some less-than-honest repairers. As in "It's not covered by guarantee, sir, because you've over-wound it".

I'd really hoped that - as a new generation took interest in mechanical watches the phrase woould finally die. Or at least be relegated to one of those things that we used to believe in but know better now - like flat earths, unicorns and the tooth fairy.

As for watches, depending on your likes, you should have a fairly good choice around that including a lot of the less loved 60s / 70s Omega range.

Thank you to all posters for some very useful guidance. Started .looking at the site www.chrono24.co.uk

Watch jumped out at me is a Longines evidenza triple. Calendar chronograph moon phase. Needless to say it's way over my intended budget of up to 1k. But I love the style and look of this watch.
Sorry can't do images!!!!

Plenty of Nomos available on Chrono24 for that budget, certainly worth giving them a gander.

Only issue i would have buying from the likes of chrono24 and ebay is with all the different sellers do you feel comfortable enough that you would end up with a genuine watch? Personally i would prefer to pay a little more and get from a trusted source.

I've used chrono24. Research the seller, use trusted checkout and be sensible

I have an Evidenza Chrono (not the moon phase though) and its very nice to wear and has a very elegant look on the wrist. I bought mine in Prague 2 years ago whilst on a birthday weekend from my other half.

Obviously you are pleased with it, would you mind giving your POV on the asking price of the watch I have noticed.
