Has the Rolex bubble finally burst? Perhaps it has

I have got quite a big scratch on my relatively new deep sea (I think done whilst clearing a blocked drain), it doesn't bother me and should the watch get stolen hopefully it is by an OCD thief and it keeps them awake at night.
Adds a bit of character to what should be a tool watch (granted it's a diver but you get the idea). If you were a concourse judge and had a row of 5 Ferrari 250 SWBs to choose a winner from, do you choose the one that's perfect in every way and only covered 250 miles in it's entire life, or the one at the end of the row that was just driven over from the Goodwood Revival complete with oil dripping from the recently ragged engine, both the original paint and the paint from the car you outbraked but didn't entirely miss into Woodcote and a front right wing bent in from the week before. I know which i'd choose and I'd try and find the owner as he's clearly going to be where the ladies are at
Dress watches on the other hand should be flawless.

I usually leave the watch at home. Only taken it away with me on 2 occasions.
For me, it's just not worth the risk / attention to walk around a country with a lot of poverty wearing a Rolex. Or have to worry about keeping it on my arm all the time instead of trusting a hotel room safe.
My experience is the opposite. I don't like the idea of putting a highly polished watch into my pocket where I might have keys, coins etc....just like I wouldn't wear a watch like that if I was cleaning out the drains, doing major diy etc.For me, it's just not worth the risk / attention to walk around a country with a lot of poverty wearing a Rolex. Or have to worry about keeping it on my arm all the time instead of trusting a hotel room safe.
On the other hand I have no issue wearing my watches all around the world including ones that might be described as having significant levels of poverty..
I've worn a gold Rolex all around Egypt twice including Cairo, Aswan and red sea. Earlier this year I wore it in India, in posh places as well as local markets. Wore it in Goa clubs and bars as well.
In a few weeks time we're off to India and Thailand and my wife and I will be wearing our Rolex watches. They're insured worldwide so I have every intention of wearing and enjoying them.
I just don't like the idea of damaging a watch unnecessarily by having it banging around in my pocket with some keys etc.
It takes 10 seconds to put it in a pouch/box of some sort and placing it into your hand luggage, its really no big deal....even though some people on here will insist its a symptom of some incurable mental disorder

There have been times where it would really not be a good idea for me to wear a Rolex abroad. I have been to street parties in Kingston in less prosperous neighbourhoods and to clubs where I stick out like a sore thumb. Wearing a Rolex would just be asking for trouble.
Personally, I wouldn't want to flaunt a Rolex in the eyes of the locals in a third world country. There's various reasons for me to leave it at home and I can do without it for a week or two

I popped into goldsmiths recently (metro centre, Newcastle)
The manager was very helpful and as I browsed we chatted about this n that but he mentioned they are very likely to open an AP branch in Manchester in the near future and that they can source other brands on a new & used basis covering VC and the like. Both things I wasn't aware of.
It was also clear they had a number of watches available for sale immediately including a white gold daytona, sky dwellers, DJs and another model which I can't remember.
Anyway if someone is looking to purchase it's def worthwhile just popping into their local branches and seeing what's in stock.

I've read people mentioning travelling to 3rd world countries and not wanting to wear.
I've lived full time in 3rd world/developing countries since 2008, I feel safer in these regions than I do when visiting the 'civilised' world.
I don't want to get hung up on this, but some of my reasons were:I've lived full time in 3rd world/developing countries since 2008, I feel safer in these regions than I do when visiting the 'civilised' world.
1) I have been to dangerous places in 3rd world countries where I already am an obvious target. A Rolex on the wrist would potentially make things even worse for me.
2) When there is a lot of poverty and people are living in shacks / struggling to survive, I feel it's a bit insensitive to walk around flaunting a flashy Rolex (or even a gold one) in their faces. I can leave it at home for a week or two.
End of massive derail.

That's my experience as well.I've lived full time in 3rd world/developing countries since 2008, I feel safer in these regions than I do when visiting the 'civilised' world.
And in very poor areas the locals have absolutely no idea what a Rolex is, they have far bigger daily issues to deal with than watch values.

I was in Italy a couple of years back, this was the daily
Anyway we are going off track from the topic at this point.

It’s probably more desirable and recognisable than whatever Rolex the worriers have, though.
I am not sure it's either of those things, to either a retail buyer or watch thief.okgo said:
I’m just surprised how many luxury watch owners are going to the 3rd world on a regular basis.
This is Pistonheads, you'd see claims of regular visits to outer spiral arm of the milky way galaxy if there is a point to be proved.okgo said:

Plenty of luxury watch owners originate from developing countries; I do and I also prefer to spend my holidays in the Far East or Africa than Europe or the US.I’m just surprised how many luxury watch owners are going to the 3rd world on a regular basis.
