I like the rose gold YM, a lot. If the Zenith Chronomaster Sport in RG didn't exist, it would be on the list. But the Zenith is my next "big" watch, and can be bought heavily discounted.
You’ll be selling it on heavily discounted too! wink

When are you taking delivery?
I've never actually managed to sell a watch!

I shall probably buy a second hand one, to be fair. Can get down to half price of RRP.

I called in to my local AD yesterday to register my interest in the 40mm Explorer.

Two surprises, one that I was told that there was actually one available to buy if I wanted to, and two that I found it to be too polished for what in my mind should be something more understated.

Appreciate it’s not one of the most in demand models, but was surprised to be offered it.

Harry, I would love to see a ‘state of the collection’ photo essay from you at some point. You’ve got some really interesting pieces!

I've got the unpopular original 39mm version of that. I don't think they're particularly blingy after you've worn them for a bit and taken the initial shine off, certainly more understated than a diver/GMT etc.

Along with the Air King I think the Explorer 1 is a wonderful looking watch and nicely understated in the right way, just a lovely watch that you can wear without attracting any attention from others. I have the white faced Explorer 2 but I sometimes wonder if I should have got the black Explorer 1 instead.

Heh. Everything from Casio to Breguet. I have zero consistency in taste, it's true.

Funnily enough I’ve had an email today but it doesn’t mention which watch or when , but it has quite a list of conditions on it.

We are contacting you to remind you of your registration of interest with us.

If you would like to make any changes or cancel your registration of interest, then please visit your nearest showroom. Click here to book an appointment

Your chosen timepiece is both in high demand and of limited distribution. It is therefore not possible to provide you with a timescale of availability or say with certainty that we will be able to source this exact timepiece for you.

If we can source your chosen model for you, we have summarised some key details from our related policies.
KEY DETAILS:
• If the timepiece becomes available for you we will contact you. We have your details on record, although please inform us if any of your personal contact details change.

• We will never take payment for the purchase of a timepiece by any other method than in-store payments. We will never ask you to transfer money into any bank account, or ask you for your credit or debit card details over the phone or by email.

• The price to be paid will be the recommended retail price at the time the purchase is completed.

• We will reserve the timepiece for 7 days for you to decide whether you wish to purchase it. If you do not offer to buy the timepiece, or contact the showroom within this time, the timepiece will become available to another client. In this instance your registration of interest will continue to be active unless you indicate otherwise.

• If you offer to purchase the timepiece, full payment and collection are needed within one week from our initial contact. When your purchase is complete, the registration of interest will no longer be live.

• When you collect the timepiece, you will need to bring a current photo driving licence or passport as identification.

• We are committed to doing all we can to protect the brand, by minimising wherever possible the activities of re-sellers operating unofficially on the ‘grey market’. In all cases the timepiece is sold and intended for your personal use only and will have the protective elements (bezel protector and stickers etc.) removed. We cannot make any exceptions to this.

• In the interests of fairness, we currently only accept one registration of interest per model and a maximum of three differing timepieces per client across the Watches of Switzerland Group. Please rest assured that all showrooms have the same access to our central stock allocations.

• If multiple registrations are made by any one client for the same model in different showrooms within our Group, all registrations of interest for that client will be cancelled.
Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further questions at this stage. We look forward to supporting you on your journey and hope to see you again in due course.

Kind regards,
The Goldsmiths Team

I got this email on the 30th April. I have 2 Rolex on the wishlist. A OP41 Silver dial (around 12months wait) and a Polar EXP2 (over 24months now).

Got a call on Thursday saying an OP41 is arriving tomorrow and would I still like to purchase. Not sure if it was sheer coincidence, or the call may come soon after for others too.
Hi I’ve just received this email too, I’ve been on the list for a deepsea for about a year. Did you think it was an indication of your allocation being near or just a coincidence.

And did your second watch happen?

Cheers

Looks like the sort of email you might send if a number of customers had been scammed out of deposits and/or the full amount for the watch by people claiming it’s in, and they need to pay for it to hold it…

Not saying that’s happened, but the reminder that they’ll only take payment in store is the key bit that stood out to me.

This WSJ piece about the "crazy economics" of the Hermés Birkin handbag reminded me of this topic.

Wouldn't the "in store payment only" thing be to avoid the 'cooling off' period (right to return for full refund) for online purchase?

That would be very cynical... lol

My AirKing came with the same polish / bling level but within a few weeks of wear it had dulled ever so slightly, don't worry.

The answer SHOULD be:

"We would recommend that Sir seek out a pre-ceramic model second-hand, which will make him appear considerably more cool than one of the current models which are, and we really don't like to admit this Sir, just a little gauche"
Is it just me that has an aversion to being called 'Sir' by salespeople. To me it reeks of 'Grace Brothers' (The store in the 80's TV sitcom 'Are you being served', in case anyone on PH is younger than 40)

A very prissy camp friend* -who drops a lot of money on first class air travel, Opera, bespoke tailoring etc - puffs up when called Sir, while I cringe when they say it.

  • I say this to his face. I don't judge his prissiness. (much !)
He's like Niles from Frasier. Except gay.

It's better than 'mate', or some other kind of forced familiarity. Seems a bit antiquated, my surname would do, but it's deemed the most polite form of address.

You prefer Kev?

I hate being called 'sir' and don't enjoy being addressed by my surname either. A simple 'Paul' is fine.

Or 'your excellency'.

I like ‘oioi geez’’

But I’m from south London, someone who can adapt with an appropriate colloquialism as a greeting is so assuaging.

I prefer my AD not to refer to me at all, nor to make direct eye contact, when negotiating a timepiece. It's a deeply unequal relationship, so why should they even try?

Makes giving them a hand job for a Pepsi easier, anyway.

That's what "wrist time" means, right?
